Tips on pooping in toilet

My DS is 3 in September and has been using the toilet since beginning of lockdown and got it really well, he loved being praised for taking himself off to do a wee/poo in the big boy toilet! He does pretty well with the wee’ing side of it but almost everyday we end up with at least one pop accident. He has taken himself for a poo and we’ve also reminded him to try but doesn’t always work. He knows when it is coming but will 9 times out of 10 take himself into a corner or into the garden to do it then will waddle in to tell one of us.

Anyone got any tips to break this habit, it’s very frustrating but try not to show it, just want to get over this hurdle!

My DS hated pooping in the toilet - he was scared he would fall in.
Potty was ok and we then got little steps he could climb up with handles to hang on to which helped him enormously.
It’s very common for poos to talk a while longer and common again for them to take themselves off to the corner and do it.
Hang in there it will get easier!

I think mine has gotten used to and likes peeing standing up too as he is quite tall, so maybe hard to change to sitting for pooing too..!

Children’s minds are so complex! We tried a sticker chart but the novelty has worn off haha! Guess we will just have to keep pushing on

My DS was exactly like this, took weeks to crack the pooping! We just watched for the signs of when he needed to go, he would go off on his own and go really quiet. Whenever this happened we took him straight to the toilet and he eventually just started telling us when he needed to go.

@Pukeymama this is exactly what he does, but a lot of the time he will refuse to go to the toilet when showing signs and can get upset about it then you don’t wanna force them and put them off toileting altogether!

My 3 year old is exactly the same! I could have wrote that myself.. i have now got his old potty back out as i thought maybe he got scared of falling down the big loo.. (he also stands up to pee).. im just seeing how it goes cos last few days hes got in the habit of pooping in his night time nappy now, after realising we didnt appreciate him pooping in the house and garden too much..

@saggydoll oh yes mine has started doing that too, pooping in his nappy after having his teeth and story read, he will stand at the upstairs gate and call down to us saying he has pooped! I feel it’s an attention thing doesn’t matter if it’s good attention or not

Oh I just remembered another tip is that apparently they don’t like the feeling of pooping in anything other than nappies so one of the things I read was to try lying a nappy in a potty so they get the feeling of pooping into it and then after they’re used to it take it away
