18 months too early?

My DD is 18 months and tells us when she needs a poo. She generally won't do it until her nappy is off. Should I try getting her to poo on the potty as a first step to potty training? She doesn't tell us when she needs to wea so I don't think we're ready for no nappy yet. Has anybody done potty training in this gradual way? We're expecting twins around the time of her 2nd birthday and have read that it would be a bad time to start with all the change.

Sound like she needs to poo on the potty anyway if she won't poo in her nappy. Give it a go even if it's for poos as we found them the hardest to train for (ds was waiting for his naptime nappy to do them for a couple of months after he was nappy free and peeing on the potty in the daytime)

We tried to potty train at about 19 months and he decided day 6 that he wasn't going to do it so stopped and then he was definitely ready at 26 months. We tried again and he got wee in 2 days with no problems (I had a four week old)

Ds1 started telling us at 18 months that he needed a poo. We tried the potty but he wanted to use the toilet. He essentially toilet trained himself. Go for it

There is no right or wrong as every child is different but if she wont poo in her nappy you are already half way there so go for it. Just take it easy with no expectations, if she is ready it will be easy, if not stop and try again in a few months.

I potty trained my son at 18 months in October. Had loads of people telling me I was mad and it wasn’t possible, but he had all the signs (can speak well which helps) so I knew he could. We spent a week at home with no pants on. 3 days of a lot of wee and then on day 4 it clicked. We have to help him pull his trousers down so he’s not totally independent with it, but I’d rather do that than change nappies!
