1 week in - what to do?!

We've been potty training 3 yr old DD for a week now. She refuses to sit on the potty but will sit on the toilet. We started off by taking her to the toilet every 20 mins or so but she just cried every time she sat on the toilet so decided to wait and just take her every hour or when i can see she needs to go. We've managed to get 4 wees in the toilet this week but only because I've seen that she needs it and have rushed her there in time. She has cried a lot when she's doing it. She's had lots of accidents every day too.
I don't know whether she really understands what's going on. She is a bit delayed in her speech/understanding which i think might be part of the problem as she is unable to say when she needs a wee or poo. She will copy what we say 'wee go toilet' but then when she wets herself she just says 'look, water'. It's like she's not making the connection between doing a wee and going to the toilet.
Any thoughts on what to do to help her or whether to keep going or wait for her to be more ready?!
Sorry for the long, rambling post.

Definitely wait til she's ready. It sounds like she's not really demonstrating any of the cues for being ready and that it's stressing everyone out. Take a break for a few months and try again when she shows an interest. Take it from someone who also tried too soon! It was a breeze when we tried again when DS was ready.
