Using putty for wee’s at home - what next?!

We’re only on day 2 and she’s doing lots of wee’s on the potty at home, but is in nappies still when going out to groups etc, but this doesn’t feel right? Should we put her in pants now and hope for the best? Take the potty everywhere with us? Or is it too soon?
She’s only just turned 2 so quite young still but she kind of instigated it and has been doing really well.
Oh and what about naps?! Nappy on or hope she doesn’t wee?

My daughter has just turned two and we just went for it. No nappies at all only at night and she got it.
I was worried about the car seat and when she was napping so I bought some puppy training pads and put them underneath her and they soak up any accidents she had.
I'd say go for it no nappies if it doesn't go well you can leave it a week and try again.

Okay thanks @LiveEachDay. Did you take the potty out everywhere with you to start with? And did little one wake during her nap if she wee’d?

No didn't take the potty. Made sure she went on the toilet before the car and then as soon as we got to where we are going.. you just need to know where the toilets are when you go out!!
Luckily for me she has dropped her nap now she turned two I don't have to worry about that.. she does sometimes wake in the night though asking for a pee so I take her then. I would put something underneath her if she's having a nap but hopefully depending how long she naps for she will stay dry for you.

I've heard some people say they went completely without nappies right away, in order to not confuse the child.
Well ... I put my son in nappies when we went somewhere at the beginning and he was never confused. I started leaving him without nappies for short distances or for the playground right in front of our building after a few weeks and after some more weeks - after he had some pees at bushes or trees ;) - also for longer distances.
During naps I put him in nappies as well, but then they were always dry so, so I stopped with them too and just made sure he pees right before his nap.

We waited until DC were older, nearly 3. Then just went totally nappy free during the day. I purposely waited for a week off nursery, play groups etc so we could have a good crack of it at home. Both had long given up on naps by the time we did toilet training.

When you go out, get them to wee before you leave and go as soon as you arrive. Then regularly remind them to go while you're out. Then go just before you leave again. Take lots of changes of clothes to be on the safe side.

We got training pants which were lined so they caught any accidents with ds.
With dd she was a similar age. We just went with it and did wees before leaving the house and made sure we knew the places to go. We didn’t have any major accidents.

So...we ventured out today with big girl pants on, to a group we usually attend on a Friday. Just before we left after we’d dressed her she had an accident as she was playing hide and seek! She did 2 wee’s in the potty at group and had one accident.

She napped for 1.5 hours in her pram and stayed dry.

We spent some time at home and again she did lots of wee wee’s on the potty.

We had booked to look around a Nursery this afternoon. She wee’d on the way there in the car, and again on the way back in the car. We were only about 45 minutes. D’oh!

We went bare bum at home again and she even did a pooh! I wasn’t expecting that as I assumed she’d want her nappy to pooh but that’s great. Then she wanted to go outside so popped trousers on and within minutes she’d had an accident.

So it seems all the time she’s home and bare bum she does fine, but when she has pants and trousers on she forgets and has accidents. Totally normal I summer, but how to we conquer it? Perseverance?

I also wasn’t expecting her to wee so much! She does drink a lot so it’s to be excited I guess.

@ElfishBiatch thank you. Even though she’s is doing lots of wee’s and pooh’s in the potty? You think go back to nappies for a while?

I disagree with Elfish, to me it does sound that she's ready. She's simply used to having nappies, so when she has pants on, she might not be completely aware that she can't just pee in them, whereas while being naked it's clear to her that she needs to use the potty.

With my son I let him run naked at home for a while, then I bought underpants and let him wear those at home, to see how it goes (went fine). I emphasised that these are underpants and that he needs to use the potty, and kept riminding him. After a couple of days I added pants to the underpants. That was BEFORE I went out with him without nappies.

Since she's fine when naked, I'd suggest to take the next step and put her in underpants at home, so that she gets used to wearing something on her bum that is not nappies.

It just sounds like far too many accidents. My DC has been in pants for a month now with a grand total of 3 accidents. It also sounds like she is seeing very frequently, and part of readiness for potty training is being able to hold on to a bigger volume, rather than just seeing little and often. Just wait until she is ready and then it will be simple.

She just started to be out of nappies! They gradually learn to hold more pee and for a longer period of time. Also, for many kids it's exciting to pee on the potty, so they will do it often, even if they could hold it, just because they can.

I disagree with pp who said she is not ready, in my experience if she is happy to use the potty you are half way there, persevere with it op and she will provably be fine for longer periods in a couple of weeks!

I used to put a pull up on my ds when we left the house at first, especially when we were in the car (didn't want to deal with wet car seats). It never confuse him, he would just pull the pullups down if he needed to wee.

It does sound a bit soon for her. My two had very few accidents. I didn’t have to train them as such. It sounds like a lot of work and a lot of fussing around. Just wait a few weeks and try again.

The closeness of pants can sometimes give them the secure feeling a nappy does. When youre at home try for a couple of days with just some loose trousers but no pants,maybe pj bottoms or looser leggings and then add pants once shes more sucessful with clothing on

@ElfishBiatch Just to be clearer, she instigated this herself. I’ve never ‘trained’ her in anything, including sleep. I didn’t expect it so soon but she wants to do wee’s on it, doesn’t want nappies etc. And I think she’s done really well in 2 days.

I’ve been doing some reading and what you’re saying @SmartPlay seems quite normal - they’ve been so used to nappies that having underwear on emulates this. It also says to remember that nappies were probably the first thing baby experienced after birth, even before feeding in a lot of cases! Makes sense that they find it difficult to ‘let go’ of that feeling. I think I’ll see how she does tomorrow, take it one day at a time.

I guess everyone’s experience differs. I’m only sharing mine. My DC was definitely holding bigger volumes as he started to flood his nappy.

@melissasummerfield thank for the encouragement! My gut says she’s ready as she instigated it, we’ll keep going and see what happens over the next few weeks.

@Shmithecat2 I did wonder this...but read and was told that it’s too confusing. You must have a bright lad to know to pull down his nappy first

@BarbarAnna Thanks, I guess they are all different aren’t they? She instigated it, I’m not ‘training’ her, I’m just going with her lead. I don’t really agree with training so to speak.

@Wereonabearhunt great idea, I’ll definitely give that a try! I now know why they say to stay at home for a few days to begin with

Definitely not too early - it sounds great for just a couple of days. They pee tonnes when you first start and then after a few days they start peeing much less.

It’s normal to do a few days bare bum, then just underwear, then add back the trousers...

Keep going! You are so close to victory!

You can buy pads that go in their underwear so it catches the start of the wee and saves the underwear there on offer at the moment in Asda and I found them good
I would say persevere they are never going to get it in one day! Also if you got a couple of days where you don't need to go out and just keep reminding to go I found that helped.. your doing a fab job with her don't listen to the people who just want to criticise nobody's perfect you'll get there in the end x
