7year old wetting the bed

Our now 7year old boy is still wetting the bed. We tried the bed wetting alarm, that didn’t help, he slept through it, we have had to put pull-ups on him at night coz we couldn’t keep up with the washing of the bedding. What’s surprising is they sell pull-ups for children upto 14years. Is this normal? When will he grow out of it? He shows no sign of stopping.

He can't help it.
Do not tell him off for it.
He will grow out of it eventually.
It's more common than you think.

DS1 was 7 when he stopped, I think it's fairly common.

The website ERIC has some fantastic resources and information about bed wetting.

It is considered normal until about 8ush and can occur until much later. Ds1 was dry at 10, ds2 at 3 and ds3 at 8.

You can't 'train' per se but you can do things to help.

  1. Avoid black currant squash and all caffeine drinks
  2. No drinks 1hour before bed (although for ds1 we did 2 hours
  3. 7 large drinks throughout the day
  4. Double wee at bedtime - once when first go up and second just before bed
  5. Only reward things they have control over (they can't control wetting the bed) and never punish bed wetting
  6. Get them to help remake own bed

We found the alarm brilliant but it needed perseverance and ds had to be keen on putting in the effort. It did take over two weeks but ds1 has never wet the bed since. Ds3 has had the occasional accident but usually related to black currant or coke drinking and he was younger when we started it.
