Potty help

Ds is 3 in two weeks and still in nappies. I don’t really know what to do with potty training now. He will have a wee in the potty when I ask him to but he will never just go and use it when he needs to go, he will just wee in his nappy. He’s never poo’d in the potty either. I have tried to put him in pants for the day to encourage him to use the potty instead of having wet pants but he will either wee in the pants or end up asking for a nappy on instead.
Please someone just tell me what to do. And also what age yours were potty trained and out of nappies!

When I trained my DS I bought the gentle potty training book and followed it's advice. It worked a treat. I knew he was ready and it sounds like your DS is too.

Basically I left him naked from the waist down for a couple of days at home so he could learn the sensation of going. It really didn't take him long to get it. I had to watch him like a hawk and encourage him to use the potty. Getting him to poo on the potty was a bit traumatic for him so we quickly switched to potty seats over the toilet which he found much nicer. Stick to your guns. If you take him out of nappies don't go back as it can cause confusion. If he is using the potty for wees he is ready to train and just needs a shove in the right direction.

The book has loads of great advice and it really helped me. I bet you could borrow it from a library or ask around your friends.

Thankyou so much. Your right, I do think he’s ready it’s just getting him into it. I’m going to pop into town and check the library for that book. And I didn’t even know about the potty seat for the toilet! A couple of times he’s wanted to sit on the toilet so maybe I should buy one of them for him!

When he’s in pants do you take him to the potty every 20-30 mins?

He won’t just take himself it’s something you have to teach him.

Make a big fuss of how grown up he is now and get him to choose some big boy pants. Read lots of books/watch songs on you tube/talk lots about using the toilet and go for it x

I take him to the potty every now and then, not every 20-30 mins. Maybe I’ll try it that often, but I think he would get abit grumpy if I take him that often and he doesn’t need to go.
I was going to watch some videos etc with him later when we are home. I thought they might help.
I suppose it’s just a lot of perseverance then, keep taking him to the potty and praising when he uses it and like you said, remind him that big boys don’t wear nappies! x
