Keep going or try again in a fee months time

We're on day 3 of potty training my 20 month old boy and we're having some success but I'm also wondering whether he's not ready properly ready yet.

We've gone completely butt naked for the first two days.

Day 1 we pumped him fully of liquid to make his wee dilute as possible. He did 4 big wees on the potty, a couple of dribbley ones and only a couple of accidents (he was outside for the accidents not near his potty so our fault).

Day 2 no accidents but he went potty at least once every 30 minutes sometimes even as close as 10 minutes apart. He was almost forcing wees out. I'm wondering whether he was doing it to have attention of flushing it down the toilet, wiping, washing hands etc. I'm worried he's going to give himself a UTI by forcing wee out

This morning he's already done 1 big wee and two forced out dribbles in the hour and a half we've been up. I haven't reminded him to go, he's just taken himself off and done it. We also tried putting training pants on, but he sat on the potty with them still on and did a wee in them before I had time to pull them down.

Is he just not ready yet, or should I persevere for a bit longer?

He has understood that weeing in the potty is a good thing, but not that he needs to keep his pants dry. I'd say that it's worth persevering for a few more days, but ditch the training pants straight away. They are confusing. Have him in regular underwear while he is awake. Do lots of reinforcement of how wonderful it is to be dry - make sure he understands the difference between wet and dry.

But, 20m is still very young. I tried training one of mine at 20m because he clearly understood what I expected of him. It didn't work and I gave up after a few days. I tried again about 10m later, and he trained within 48h.

We went out and bought some proper pants and he's only had two accidents in them, one as he was in the highchair and didn't tell us he needed a wee and the other as he was distracted.

He's still going every half an hour for a wee on the potty though 🤷‍♀️

I'd happily not potty train until he was older but he's the one which really wants to do it. He's been asking to go on the potty at the childminders, informing us every time he's weed for the last month and been absolutely fascinated with watching me and DH go.

I'll give it another couple of days to see if he can go longer between wees as every 30 minutes is not practical at all.

Don't put pants on, just loose bottoms with no underwear.

And don't give him too much liquid - just normal drinks so you can get used to how frequently he normally wees. By giving him so much liquid on day 1 you've possibly sent his system into a bit of overdrive so just go back to normal and see if he starts holding it for a bit longer.

It sounds like he's doing very well so it would be a shame to go back into nappies. I'd just try make the whole thing as low key as possible, not too much excitement about wees in the potty etc

20 months?! Wow. I started my boy when he was 3. Good luck!

20 months is really young to potty train I dont plan on starting until nearer 2.5yrs.

I would keep it casual at this age get him use to the potty and really positively reinforce when he sits on it but I wouldnt be forcing anything. But to be honest if he is taking himself to the potty on his own maybe he is ready only you know your boy.

He's doing really well, and he wants to do it - he'll settle down as far as frequency goes. PLEASE don't go backwards!!
A child often loses interest again and if you miss that window it can be so much harder!

And yes, it is young but the unprovoked interest and recognition of wet nappies is what we wait for, some get the earlier just like with anything! I've know children be 28 months, and others 4 yrs!

He’s young but if he’s interested and taking himself then keep going even if it’s just while at home for now. Don’t give him loads of extra liquid, there’s no need to do that.

Yes to real pants so he can feel that wetness doesn't feel nice and no to extra liquids.
He's doing fab, 2/3 of my ds's potty trained around this age, the 3rd was not interested until just before he was to start nursery.

How's it going? DS potty trained himself at just turned 2. Then lost interest for a few months. And then at 2 1/2 that was that.

No involvement from us at all. Was surreal

Roll forward a few years and I have no idea what to do with DD who is 3 and shows a flicker of interest but no more!!!!
