Elimination communication support thread

Hi,
I have an 8 month old baby and in doing what you would call part time elimination communication with.
I use reusable nappies.
Started holding my baby over the toilet to poo when weaning. She said if I do that we should get a potty. Baby took to it straight away, did a wee and we have fun when she sits on the potty.
Some days are better than others but apart from when we went out to soft play this morning Dr has has been dry since 4pm last night! So that's one wet nappy and everything else in the potty. She's currently have a nappy free nap. Eek.
I'm getting quite enthusiastic about this, read a book....but not comfortable telling people in real life in case they think I'm batty. Before I started I gave her nappy free time every day.
Anyone else?

Does this work with disposable nappies? I have a one year old and want to start soon

It's so hard to explain to people that EC is a different thing to potty training. We were part time with DD and hopefully get going almost from birth once this one arrives.

Haha river, I don't mind as I don't know you, it's fun and positive, I researched it and found no real cons, she still wees in nappies. Dora, I read a book diper free baby, and yes you can use disposable s. However, they can't feel wet so you have to give them some nappy free time as well. It can be as simple as once a day, eg when they wake up as babies normally wee as soon as they wake. Means they don't forget what it feels like to wee. Take a look at this.www.bornready.uk

It wouldn't be for me but it's not batty, many other cultures would look at our nappy use and be baffled.

I don't actually see the point in it. It seems like an awful lot of extra work for not much purpose. I don't think you are batty; I just don't really get it. I realise that's probably a fault on my part though.

Also, she was wearing a nappy at soft play. She almost always wears nappies but choses to go in the potty when I take it off.

The point.. for me it started off to prevent nappy rash, and she really took to it. However, I don't do it properly, as we have carpets everywhere so she's in nappies. Sometimes a breastfeed her without a nappy with a muslin on my lap and she's yet to wee on me

@john how old is dd, what age did you start? Is she in nappies? Congratulations on expecting, when is your newborn due. I was so unconfident about just holding my newborn and carrying her at the begginig, I don't think I'd be holding her over the potty. @disfor do you practice EC?

I started with just paying attention to cues and checking her nappy to see if we had been correct. Then didn't go for pottying till she was I think around 20weeks. We got more and more successful once she became able to sit. However over enthusiastic grandparents managed to put her off the whole thing around 14 months but she then potty trained herself (day and night) over 2 weeks at 2.5yrs.

I don't call it elimination communication--I call it "things to do with your baby that make toilet training (a bit later on) a lot earlier and easier". Not quite as catchy though....!

Did this with my eldest. She got out of nappies early with no hardcore "training" as such required--just words of appreciation when she used the potty or toilet. Will be doing it with my next one too. Decided to do this because I was worried by the sheer numbers of people I was seeing who were engaged in epic struggles with 2/3/4 y o children who were refusing to pee or (especially) poo without a nappy on.
