Withholding - to attempt to potty train or not?

DD is 2y 4m. We’ve not attempted potty training yet, not least because she's withholding her poos, which has been going on for a good 6 months now. We have a potty upstairs and downstairs and talk about it and give her the option to sit on it before her bath. This week she’s now gone 5 days without a poo but obviously needs, and gets particularly antsy about it at the dinner table and has started saying “I need to sit on the potty”. So we praise her for asking and get the potty for her to sit on (with nappy and trousers on still, she normally doesn't want them off). And that’s usually the end of it. She’ll sit for 3-60 secs usually, no poo, then she’s off again. Tonight though she actually pulled down her trousers and nappy before having a sit down on it.

Our plan has been not to even try potty training until she’s over the withholding but if she’s asking for the potty now does this mean we should give it a go? I don’t want to put too much pressure on her and undo the progress we’ve made so far on reducing her anxiety about pooing though!

So as not to drip feed, she's on low dose laxido and lactulose, which has resulted in poos that are no longer sore for her to pass. We've got a baby on the way in April so it would be convenient to have her potty trained before that but really our main priority is to be guided by her.
