Disaster day 2 of Potty Training - where am I going wrong?!

Hello Wise MNs!
Any help would be super duper appreciated
We're Day 2 into Potty Training with our 2.5yr Toddler, struggling to get him to even sit on the Potty let alone use it.
He is just peeing everywhere, 7 so far this Morning - he does tell me he needs to Wee but when it's a fraction too late.
He has chosen little Pants and we have a Reward chart if needed but he isn't interested in anything potty related at all.
We have a Potty in all the bathrooms and he'll happily sit on it and chat when coming with Me but he's yet to do anything in there.
Does this mean he isn't quite ready? Really would like to persevere but not sure where to go from now?

Any tips out there please, my carpets are only a fortnight old! Would love to conquer this next Parenting challenge!

He’s not ready. Let him know the option is there if he wants, but leave it a month and try again. I waited until both mine told me they wanted to wear pants. DS was pretty good within 48 hrs, but took a fortnight to master everything (day, night, wees, poos). DD had wees and poos, night and day nailed in 48hrs.

I'm in the same position. My daughter is the same age and today and yesterday just peed on the floor!
She has used the potty for wees and poos a few times before and I really thought she was getting it, but no two days of disaster!

Just had a chat with DH and think you're right, he's not ready yet.
He hasn't displayed any of the typical 'warning signs' leading up to us trying so think we'll just wait for him to show some interest. No rush I guess

Otherwise scrap the pants, naked for now. Every time he sees, pick him up and say hold it and move him to the potty. He's not yet linking the feeling of needing to wee with actually seeing so he won't be able to tell you. That's what you need to teach him. The book explains it all though!

can he ride a 4 wheels bike ? Put him on a bike, he has to exercise more, he is almost there. wait another month, it's fine.

It's only Day 2! He's not going to get it over night. Read Oh Crap and perservere.

Day 2 here with 3 year old DS. He's happy to wear pants. He understands that wees and poos need to be in the potty or toilet. He'll happily sit on the potty if the tv is on.

7 accidents so far....sigh....

Ditch the pants

Take the pants off, it’s only day 2! Read Oh Crap and watch him, you and he will learn soon enough when he needs to go. You’re teaching him something brand new so it’s unlikely he’ll have mastered it in a day.

If it were me, I’d ditch the reward chart too. I think peeing and pooing in the right place is a standard skill (given adequate time for them to learn) I don’t think rewards should be external. Either way, you can do it OP. Good luck.

Another fan of OH Crap - pants just confuse them. If he can follow instructions he is capable. Go back to nappies, our the potties away, read the book and start again x

I felt like this! But it really is perseverance, it's a messy old business but you will get there. Drop the pants. We found chocolate buttons were a huge motivator. Good luck! Ps. Hope you have hard floors.

I did the 'oh crap' book method and kept him out of pants for the first few days and then jogger or shorts for well over a month. He got it very quickly but even now (5 months later) he sometimes starts a little wee in his pants before asking for the toilet. According to the book, pants feel too much like nappies which is why it's easier without.

Another recommendation for reading 'oh crap'.... I potty trained my daughter using it at age 2.5 earlier in the year. In saying that day 2 was the WORST! I was almost crying with frustration but somehow it just clicked on day 3! So I'd maybe have him naked around the house today and be watching him intently ready to whip the potty under him at the slightest sight of him needing to go!

He cant be naked from the waist down all the time though. What do you do if they have to go to nursery or out and about?

DS has got the hang of sitting on the potty when he's without pants/bottoms so does that mean it's ok to put them on him now? He's reasonably good at pulling them down and up!

Go commando for a few weeks - loose joggers only.

Underwear feels tight like a nappy so you can get more accidents. You have to break the association otherwise underwear can give them the security to wee.

I'd say if it's this hard he's not ready. The longer you wait, the easier it is in my experience. I waited until ds was three and he cracked it straight away. He was quite motivated as he asked to not wear nappies at that point. Earlier attempts were doomed as he wasn't interested.

Potty training is hard and will only delay the inevitable. It could take just as long - who knows. You have to commit either way so as not to confuse. DS was commando for months in autumn and I only put pants on when he'd been trained for about 2.5 months.

Are you still going OP? No problem with stopping to reset and try again - the book is well worth a read as others have said too xx
