When is it safe to actually go somewhere?

We’re about a week into potty training dd2.5. It’s going reasonably well I think.

We’re getting most wees and poos in the potty. But it relies on me watching like a hawk for signs she needs to go. Accidents seem to happen when she is distracted or involved in something.

So at what point do I brave actually going somewhere?

I guess the playground would be fine. We can take a travel potty. And it would be no great drama if she had an accident outside. But what about somewhere inside, like the library, playgroup, or even a soft play?

I don’t really think I can whip out the travel potty in the library. And I think she’d be very unhappy about being dragged out of a soft play or playgroup to try in the potty.

Do I just hold off on anywhere like this for now until I’m more confident she can do a wee before we go, and hold on until we’re done?

I find that a week in they are able to last an hour at least in between wees. So you would ask her to try before you set off and again when you get to wherever you are going. Then just remind every hour or so, if needs be say that you need the loo and take her with you.

I'm on day 7 and am asking myself the same questions. I've been putting her in pull ups but this is not something I want to continue for much longer!

I think a lot of it is a confidence thing for me, rather than my child! I am not confident about taking her out without a pull up.

I seem to remember asking my older children if they needed a wee quite regularly, and going somewhere with public toilets so that I could take them every hour(ish). But they are much more compliant than my toddler.

I took my ds to the zoo on day three. Not deliberately I should add, it was his idea to beg to wear pants and refuse nappies.

I just made sure we went in and 'tried' every time we passed a toilet block. It was fine.

We have a few rules about toilet trying, like before bed, and before a longish car journey.... in the early days I'd have enforced a 'just in case wee' before going into softplay too and before going something like storytime began.

Oh gosh I remember once actually, i took my son to the park and he said he needed a poo. I sat him on the potty under a tree and he did he most disgusting poo, I just bagged up the potty and threw the whole thing in the bin! Luckily it was only a pound shop potty!

It’s tricky because dd is very resistant to sitting on the potty, and won’t sit just to ‘try’. She is only willing to sit when she needs to go / is clearly desperate.

She can go several hours without a wee (record is about 5 I think!). So chances are we’d be ok for a quick trip out. But it’s a bit unpredictable!

@graysor my eldest daughter was like that, and I don't recall her having any accidents while we were out. She would get really distressed when she needed a wee and needed a lot of persuasion to sit on the potty. But she was dry day and night in 2 weeks!

I’m on day 5 with my 2.5 year old. Going well at home )although I have to tell him to try he’s never once asked to go) but I haven’t braved going out yet without a pull up on... I need to stop as i know it’s going to give him mixed messages.

I also wonder how my son would be on an actual toilet - so far he has only used the potty and the baby sized toilet at nursery. Not sure how holiding him over a proper one would work?

Maybe a trial trip to the playground is on order, and we can see how we get on.

I really want to avoid putting her in a pull up if at all possible, as she’s doing pretty well and don’t want to confuse her at all.

Summer, I’ve got a travel potty that doubles up as a training seat for the loo, that could be used while out and about. Not that we’ve tried it yet!

We've been out and about since day 3 without pullups etc(he's got a camel like bladder tho and can hold it for 1-2 hours) one accident at the park and as its outside I didn't think too bad.

We've done a quick supermarket run and car journey - made sure I made him go before hand which caused a ton of tantrums.

Went to the Ils today and journey was fine, and he asked to go as soon as we go there! I bought a travel potty thats lightweight and goes in my bag - basically replaced the nappies etc in our day bag with this as he refuses to go near a ;proper' toilet thats not ours

I took the travel potty every where. I once was in the middle of a gp appointment and I could tell she needed it. The gp was horrified and thought she was going to wee on the floor . I had thought, of all place, this would be the least dramatic. He nearly wet himself until he saw the potty for her.

I took my DS out on day three - just a quick trip to the shop - asked him to go before but he didn't want/need to so I put a puppy training pad (had a puppy, didn't buy them just for this!) on the car seat just in case but he was fine, were out for about 15-20mins with no accident but as soon as we got in he needed a wee! I started doing the same thing (small trips) for a few more days to try and gets him used to going for a wee before we left the house as we were due to visit DPs parents at the weekend which is a longer drive. He caught on in those few days and only started asking to go for a wee in the last 10minutes of the drive up to PIL and managed to hold on til we got inside.
My DS now has a thing where he must go to the toilet in a new place even if he doesn't have to go! It's a good thing he will use toilets but kind of annoying when you've just got to a new restaurant and have to spend the first 10minutes searching for the bathroom and stand holding him over a toilet in a tiny cubicle for a full 2minutes before he says 'ok I don't need it anymore!' (And repeat at least 3 times before I've even ordered my food!)

Can anyone let me know which travel potty they bought?

Do you just take it with you and get it out wherever you are? What do you do with the contents?

We have had no accidents today! A trip to the garden centre and our first poo!

Summerdays we have a pottete travel potty. It folds flat to carry. And they poo/wee into a plastic bag with an absorbent pad in it. Then you just tie up the bag and dispose asap! I can’t give a personal recommendation though, we still haven’t used ours!

We did venture out briefly this morning to the library and playground. No accidents while we were out. But 3 wees on the floor at home . At least we got the poo in the potty.

Thanks graysor it looks good. Well done for going out, we managed a quick trip to the garden centre with no accidents. No accidents yesterday but 2 today (one wee one poo) and I’m still having to bribe him to sit on the potty every time.

I had one of those fold up loo seat inserts and we were out and about straight away. Never used a potty because I couldn’t face clearing it out and it used to make me gag a bit to see other kids leaving a massive shit in them in random places at playgroup

My youngest had the occasional accident when he was busy playing but in pants and trousers/shorts he never actually made a puddle and I always figured all kids have to do this so no one is going to mind the occasional damp patch
