How to tell when ready!?

DD is 28 months. She doesn't really tell us when she's done a wee or a poo, although often seems to know she's about to wee as she stops and sort of looks down! She's a bit hit and miss if we ask her whether she has been too.

We have a couple of potty's (courtesy of MIL for her 2nd birthday Hmm), and I think she knows what they are for... sometimes she likes to get one and take her trousers and nappy off and have a sit, but never does anything. She also says things like 'do a wee wee on potty. She regularly has nappy free time anyway, however I find she will hold in a wee until her nappy is back on more and more.

DC2 due in early August, and DD will be home all summer as she's in term time only childcare. Part of me thinks we should try and train her over the summer when we are all home (DH is a teacher) but I don't really know if she's a) ready, or b) having a new baby added to the mix will be unsettling and make it a disaster. There is no rush but having the summer seemed as good a time as any!?

I think it can be hard to know if they are ready until you have given it a good try. I would decide on a week at the start of the holidays and then go for it. However after a couple of days if it is not happening stop then try again maybe October half term. I would try giving loads of drinks, no clothes on bottom half, stay in one place, potty near by, and not say to much other than ‘wees and poos on the potty’ and lots of praise for success. Any accidents just say ‘oh dear, next time remember wees on the toilet’. I got really stressed with ds1 and it was a disaster. I was so much more relaxed with ds2 and ds3 and it all happened in the end.

Thank you, that's good advice! I guess we will give it a shot in a couple of months time and then see what happens. I get a bit irritated with my MIL as she keeps asking when we are going to potty train her and is she using her potty yet, and I keep saying there is no rush and when she's ready. I don't want it to be this big deal where it turns into a disaster!
