Constantly sitting and waiting on the potty

My little boy turned 2 in September. We had a blast a potty training in the summer but he strained himself trying to go, so I put it on hold. He’s been showing signs of being ready again so we’re having another go.

However he thinks he needs to spend all his time just sitting and waiting on the potty. How do I teach him it’s ok to go off and play and just sit on the potty when he feels he needs to go?

It doesn't sound like he knows what the feeling of needing to go is - that's ok though because essentially that's what potty training is about.

We used the Oh Crap book which puts potty training as a sequence of 'I have done a wee' -> 'I am weeing' -> 'I need to wee'. It sounds like your DS knows what you want to happen but hasn't linked these stages yet.

What happens if you just take him off the potty to go and play? I'd really recommend reading the book if you can download it. It made so much sense to me and helped hugely with the whole thing.
