does everyone take a potty/potette/training seat out and about?

Three and a half year old DD might finally be staying in pants. I've got too much baby plastic already and am trying to decide whether to buy a second hand potette or just take a potty out with me (she is happy to use a training seat too). We have done one wee on a grown up toilet without a training seat at the swimming pool with me having to put my hands on the back of the seat to help to brace her so she was relaxed enough to wee. I do not want to be doing this in public toilets! Bleurgh. What did/do you do?

I had a seat that could be a potty with a bag with legs down or a training seat with the legs out. It fitted in a plastic bag as well. Not that bag either. We took it on holiday with us but just for general out and about, I’ll either hold DD or she’ll put her arms behind her on the seat and then we wash our hands ridiculously thoroughly.

Have a cheapo potty in the boot in case of emergency for nearly 3yo, but otherwise they're big enough to use toilets at home and seems to enjoy the novelty of toilets in public! We do have a folding potty somewhere which is vaguely useful for emergency poo situations but I don't carry it now.

I keep one in the back of the car but have never carried it around. If dd needs a wee and there is no toilet I just find the nearest tree.

Yup, dd was fully trained at 2.5 but I still take potette out if we are going somewhere with no loos or a long walk to them and she is coming up 4.5

I never had a portable potty but I used mainly buses and trains to get about. Usually a journey would involve holding dd over the side of the path at some point! Looking back it would have been a good idea! She's 4 now and very reliable so it's not neccissery.

We did at start of potty training (took the pottete out) but only for the first 2-3 weeks.

Mine also had poo issues she was a bit younger than your DD she was 2.5 when clean and dry during the day but needed to be in a potty position to poo. Now we’re 2 months on so 2 years 7 months and will sit on a toilet seat and sink in slightly to get the ‘position’ she needs!

I never did with either dd or ds. Ds is nearly 4 now, dry in the day for about 8 months.

He does wee anywhere though. He particularly likes to wee on my car tyre and I am sure half the car tyre wees he desperately needs are forced out.

PS always stopping the car and doing it over the side of a pavement using the door as a shield!

Feeling your pain miaow, but I'd think it's a good idea to make pooing as easy as possible too. I think I have similar issues with DD, but it's too soon to say. Red I don't know how you travelled on buses without an accident, huge respect to you and your kid for that. Don't you have any 'she couldn't wait until the next stop' stories? Seems like most of you didn't, but DD is making this as tortuous for the both of us as possible, so I'm still thinking I need to take something with us.

That didn't read right, I meant seems like most of you didn't take something out with you except in the early days, which says maybe I don't need the potette and should just take a potty for a bit.

A silver lining of DD being a reluctant potty trainer is that she learned to hold it for a long time she’d be sat on the potty, refusing to go.

We never needed to carry a potty or seat around with us. We don’t usually do long car journeys, so have never stopped at the side of the road. We may have been lucky, but my second was less triable than my first. We had to do a few ‘adventure wees’ behind bushes.

When using toilets I would either hold their hands or under their arms to keep them steady. If I needed to wipe a bottom then I got them to grab my legs, often with their head sticking out between my legs.

I didn't bother but DD was good at sitting on normal toilets if there wasn't a potty available (lots of public toilets where I am have potties in them too) and she thankfully was able to hold it very well. I wasn't bothered about having to support her on public toilet seats - just made sure we both washed our hands really well afterwards!

We did. It saved some potential accidents on a number of occasions when she decided she needed a wee NOW! (Gatwick Airport comes to mind). We now keep it in the car and have used it on the sides of motorways etc when she won't make it to the next loo.

+1 for potette. Particularly when we go to the park

We are week 2 of potty training and taking potty with us most places. She's doing pretty well at just perching on loos when out though, whilst being held by me. She seems to prefer the big loo to a potty when not at home, which is handy. Good luck all potty trainers!

I've been taking a potty out, so at the moment I'm not going to get the potette thing, but I'm not ruling it out. She's done a wee on a big toilet too, so hopefully that will become our preferred method. Yes, smelly, good luck to us all!
