3yr old wetting the bed on purpose

Hi everyone,

I'm at a loss, I have lovely 3yr old boy, who my wife and I have trying to potty train for months now, generally during the day he is dry, although we have to constantly check with him and encourage him to use his potty otherwise he'd wet himself. But the real problem is at night, we put him into nappies for night time, and he seems to be taking his nappie down to simply wet the bed, he has a potty in his room! I just don't know what to do, does he need to see a physiatrist or something?

Any advice is appreciated

Have you tried leaving him in a wet bed overnight? He might be doing it for attention if you check up on him at night.

Is it possible he is doing it in a confused state at night as he is used to pulling pants down during the day?

I once woke up to find my son peeing on the floor outside his room, still asleep! He turned around and went back to bed and had no memory of it the next day!

Maybe putting him in a vest or sleepsuit will show whether he is really determined to wee in the bed or is just doing it on autopilot!

We have found getting dry at night to be really long process and by concentrating on doing what we can to reduce the hassle in the night has really helped. I don't know if this helps but good luck!

Can you leave him in nappies at night time? 3 is still quite wee.

What if you put him to bed, then 10 minutes later do a 'dry check', with loads of fanfare for the hopefully dry bed? Might lodge the seed of keeping the bed dry into his subconscious??

It's very normal for children up to the age of 7 not to be dry at night.
I'm guessing your son is pulling his willy out of his nappy whilst sleeping (mine did that for a while during the day-had a nappy on but was wet!!#@ I was confused until I saw him do it). I don't think there's anything you can do about that.
