How long til your DC started saying they need the toilet?

DS is 2.9 and we've been nappyless during the day for nearly 2 weeks. We went with the every 20 then up to 30/40 minutes on the loo approach for the first week and now I probably encourage a trip to the toilet every 45 mins to an hour.

He very rarely has initiated the trip to the toilet, but he is mostly happy to go when we get there, both wees and poos, although we have had a few accidents here and there.

I know other methods produce quicker results for self initiation, but as DS is at daycare 3 days a week I felt this method best suited us. We had started off with stickers as rewards, but he's not been bothered by that this week.

Do my question is, when should he start saying he needs the toilet? Is it time for me to step back and wait for him to speak up, or should we keep going with what we've been doing and it'll come when he's ready? Thanks!

I'm no expert but if you're taking him to the toilet every 45mins I would doubt he has any 'need' to go in the sense that he can feel it. I would think you need to either extend the time between trips, or tell him to let you know if he feels he need to go. It may take him a while to work out what that feeling is, though, so you'll probably have an increase in accidents to start with.

Whichever option you go with I'd give him plenty of drinks so he gets the hang of what a full bladder feels like.

Yes. That's what I figured. Thanks :)

I agree. Stop taking him. He has no idea

Sorry - posted too soon. He has no idea when his bladder is full or not. You're just going to need to leave him.
