5 year old in night nappied

My DS is 5 now and still wears nappies to bed and they are wet when he wakes up, DH thinks he's too old to wear them now and we should take them off, I think he's just going to wet anyway :/ what's best to Do? He doesn't mind wearing them so i see no problem

It's hormonal for being dry at night. Up to 7 is quite normal. My 5 year old still has pull ups at night even though she was dry through the day at 18 months. If a child isn't dry after 7, they'll look into hormonal causes.

One of my kids was out of nappies at night before they were two.

The other was seven.

Both treated the same and both fine now.

Kids are different and develop at different rates and aim different areas.

Leave him in nappies until he is dry. Make sure he goes to the loo last thing before bed.

In another twelve months it will have either sorted or you should maybe just get him checked out.

you have to get rid of the nappy thing.
you can put some protector on his bed.
before bed take him to last toilet and tell him do all of it so his bed doesn't get wet.
also, if he has toilet during sleep tell him to call you to take to toilet.
I believe you will get rid of it soon.

My DS was like this. We left them on him until he asked to not wear them (very suddenly at around 5.5 - I think something might have been said at school) then tried without for a bit. He wet the bed most nights and it was awful as it's a horrible way to wake up so he'd get really upset and anxious.

We then tried 'lifting' him (taking him to the loo at about 11pm without fully waking him) and this usually worked, but we were worried it wasn't helping him learn to go to the loo if he needed it.

We went to the gp, who recommended the ERIC website but said she wouldn't do anything until he was eight so not to worry until then.

Then suddenly... it stopped. Just like that.

He's nearly six and no longer wears nappies, no longer needs lifting. He's dry most nights - maybe wets once a fortnight or less.

Long story short, if it's not bothering him, do nothing. It will come.

DD wore night nappies until 6! Like your DS, she wanted out of them. Initiative is good as it gives you something to work with.

DD always goes to the toilet before bed (before this, she was quite lazy about it) and do limit drinks in the evening. You'll find your son will take to nights without nappies quite quickly. Get a waterproof pad though, just in case. Ikea offer reasonably priced ones.

It's quite normal at 5 yrs old. Ask the other parents at school if you need reassurance- there will be lots of kids still in night nappies!

It is hormonal so can't be forced, however, once the hormone kicks in there could be other issues there. Has he ever been dry? If not I believe that it is within the realms of normal until 7 years old

If he doesn't wake up when he needs a wee nothing will help. My ds was out of nappies at night at 3. My dd was 7. She didnt wake. Not even when wet. I tried all sorts. Lifting erecked my back! Then one day she was dry. My friend's child is 7.5 and nowhere near dry.

One thing i found that did mke a difference was enouraging more drinking and toileting during he day. My dd drinks very little. My ds who was dry at night at 3 has always drank a lot.

Don't make it an issue, at all.

It'll probably just naturally happen fairly soon. There needs to be a hormone present that concentrates the urine at night, so they don't need to pee as often. You'll find that he'll just start waking up with a dry nappy.

Yes, many kids do it sooner, but there's a reason the night time pyjama pants come in the sizes they do.

Children aren't dry at night until their bodies start to produce the hormone that regulates overnight urine production. For some kids that kicks in at the age they are toilet trained in the day time. For others it happens a lot later.

My son is 9 and has to take tablets to replace the hormone as he doesn't produce it himself yet. My daughter was 2 and a half when she was dry over night. It's not the child and they can't be trained.

I think we were first seen by the enuresis clinic when my son was 7. They were fab and had lots of helpful ideas and things to try. Most of all they helped my son realise it wasn't his fault.

They investigated the size of his bladder (it's fine), whether he was just in too deep a sleep and wasn't aware he needed the toilet (he wasn't) or if he just didn't produce the hormone. He doesn't.

If your son wants to have a go without the pull ups then that's great. It might be that he's in the habit of using them and after a few days he's dry over night but equally he might not be. Either way, I'd be child led and not make a huge fuss about it.

My children still wore nappies at night when they were five, too. As PPs have said, night time dryness only occurs once the body is producing a particular hormone. The age at which children's bodies are sufficiently mature enough to produce this hormone varies somewhat, just as the age at which children lose their first milk teeth varies. Make sure your DS does a wee before bed. You will eventually notice that his nappy is occasionally dry in the morning, and this becomes more frequent. When he is usually dry, leave the nappy off (and make up his bed with two bottom sheets separated by a waterproof sheet, so on the nights when he does wet, you can easily strip off the top sheet and the waterproof sheet and the bed is then ready for him to get back into. Then you can both get back to sleep quickly!

My son is 6 soon and he is wearing a nappy at night.
