Poo-splosions....help!

Hi,

So my DD is 7 mo, and pretty much every time she craps it goes all up her back and through her clothes. From talking to other parents it seems this is not as par for the course as I thought it was.

Any advice? We use quite cheap nappies but it has happened with all brands -- Pampers, Huggies, Naty, and the own brand ones we use now. She often sits in her bouncy chair but even when she is crawling around hunched over the crap still seems to go up the back.

We are, doing baby led weaning, but this has been an issue for months...kind of her whole life. Part of me wonders if we're doing the nappies up wrong, but it happens regardless of whether I or DP have fastened them.

This may sound obvious, but are the nappies big enough?
Do you leave a little looseness round the bum to catch/contain?

I agree with Rock, we get this issue when the nappies are too small. Also a poo in a wet nappy can cause it.

Obvious suggestions are more than welcome! I think they're big enough, yes. She's in size 4 and was in the 4+ recently (as that was all they had in the shop) and it still happened.

We leave some looseness but you might be right about the wet nappy issue, but it happens even when she's in a fresh one. Frustrating as she's really wrecking clothes, quite apart from it being gross. Also we're taking a few (short haul) flights this month and that will be unpleasant (this did happen when I flew long haul with her when she was 5mo, but the volume of output was lower then!)

Does it smells really foul, like vinegar or is it kinda runny or mucusy. If so then it may be worth taking her to the Drs to look at excess stomach acid or mild food allergies as these can cause nappies to explode out and leak. We have a lot of experience with ds because of this

It is very runny, yes. Is that unusual? Outs a bit chunkier (urgh, sorry) since she started on food, but still basically soupy (again...sorry).

She's my first and I've no experience with babies...NCT taught us about newborn poo but not as they get older.

I feel bloody ignorant...

My DS was always soup poo and often exploded out of the nappy. Now we are weaning (he is 6months) it's changed totally to normal human poo.

Would you be able to avoid dairy for two weeks and see if that helps? You can get a soya based formula. It worked for DS and a few friends I suggested it to.

Ah. Yeah people have said about the poo becoming more normal and human. She eats once a day (sometimes twice) and not lot, so I guess I thought it was early to change, but she has been eating food for a month so I guess it is unusual.

She breastfeeds and doesn't have formula. Do you mean I should stop giving her dairy or I should cut it out myself? Happy to try either/both. She doesn't have a lot of dairy herself, not every day anyway.

When she was very small she had like...foamy poo.. and the midwife suggested I cut down on dairy then, which I did, but then I thought it was normal after that, but maybe I was wrong...

I will ask the nurse/baby clinic tomorrow but very much appreciate your advice and thoughts all!

If you're happy to try it then definitely cut out her dairy and I suppose yours too to give it a fair trial. There's loads of dairy replacement foods now so it shouldn't be too difficult. Not for a couple of weeks to see at least. Good luck.

So I've been trying the dairy-free thing and it's made a real difference -- I feel bad for not thinking earlier that something was wrong... the baby looks pretty well nourished, though..she's a chubster.

I thought things were significantly better, and then I happened to try a tiny piece of cheesecake (I was at a wedding...and I love cheesecake...and I wasn't sure it was working) but the effect was immediate.

So. Just in case others find this thread, give that a go!

(Also I had a soy hot chocolate at one point...but the powder must have had milk it in...so beware!)

Glad you found a solution. I just wanted to add that reusable nappies can help with this too. In my experience, there's much less chance of the up the back explosion when I use them. Mine is 7 months too and her poo is much more solid now (actually she's constipated with gaviscon I reckon, so she's gone too far the other direction). Hopefully as the weaning continues to 3 meals a day, and dairy is still off the table, you will see a big difference.

I also wanted to say that I also have a cmpa child so i fully sympathize with the messy stools. Also, the soya protein is very similar to the cows milk protein so little one can have the same reaction to soya/milk. If you enjoy hot choc try hazelnut milk and choc shot (very yummy!). If you need any dairy free recipe ideas for yourself &/or little one there's a great facebook page called cmpa for breastfeeding
