Is she ready? 21 months and obsessed with potty!

I wasn't expecting to be potty training my DD for a few months, but she goes to nursery and has seen older children use the potty a lot. She kept running into the bathroom saying she wanted to do a wee on the potty, so we bought one a couple of weeks ago. She is a bit obsessed with it at the moment, and wants to sit on it (nappy on) while I sit on the loo next to her. In the last day she has wanted to take all of her clothes off and sit on the potty, last night she did a wee on it but I'm not sure if it was a fluke or not! Other times she says 'wee wee potty', sits on it and doesn't do anything. I'm not sure if she's ready for potty training or just playing! Any thoughts?

Yes go for it. Ds was like this last year at approx the same age, he said he wanted to use the potty. He was fully trained within a few days. He was ready and keen and was already going for a wee on the potty before his bath and first thing in the morning so dh decided to go for it. Lots of people said he was young to stop using nappies (even the health visitors were surprised) but we had no problems.

I agree, go for it. My ds is already using the potty at 18 months, which is down to the fact he copies everything his older sister does. He is pretty much dry for wees, and he will ask me for the potty when he needs a poo. I still have him in nappy pants though as he doesn't yet have the level of control needed to hang on if he really needs to go.

There is no harm in trying! My girls were clean at 2yrs old. We had introduced the potty/toilet since 6 months old and when they were ready they transitioned onto full-time use, no stress. Just try it and see how she gets on!

Thanks all! Yes reading my post back it does sound like she's ready doesn't it! I think we'll do as you suggest oblada, just keep it relaxed and see how much she goes to it herself. Meanwhile she is enjoying watching me pee - slightly mortifying as she tried to wipe my bum earlier!!

Oh if you need to use a nappy for any reason (and don't use cloth), try putting pants on then the nappy - so they get the uncomfy, wet sensation but you don't get a wet bed/car seat etc!

I think you should grab this window of opportunity while shes interested

This is interesting. My nearly 20 month old dd has been copying her brother and has started pooing on toilet. With prompts and good timing she wees on the potty. But I put her in pants for a couple of days and she seems oblivious so I have cleaned up puddles all day and just dealt with a poo in her pants. Think I'll put her back in nappies and just offer her potty/toilet regularly. Bit worried I might miss a good opportunity but she's back to her childminder tomorrow.

Hello! Well we are just getting more of the same really. We are on holiday this week so haven't made much progress, I read somewhere not to try it when you're out of your normal routine, but then it's hot here so it's a bit easier to have nappy free time etc... She still asks to go on the potty but doesn't stay on it for long and hasn't managed to do anything else yet. So we're just trying to keep it relaxed and let her go on it when she wants to, but staying in nappies the rest of the time. I think we might try some training pants when we get home. It's a difficult one isn't it, I don't want to rush her but also don't want to miss a good opportunity!
