Potty training?-DS poos in small bits, Help!!

Our DS will be 3 in November and I'm hoping to start potting training him in October (Our DD starts school in September so want to get used to that and get her settled first)
So here's my dilema, he's always done his poos in little bits and rarely does it all at once. Today for instance, he's on his 5th nappy 4 of which were small bits of poo. There's often longish gaps between each bit of poo so it's not like I can leave him to finish as he absolutely stinks if I don't change him. So my question is this. Is there anyone out the who has experienced this sort of thing? Any tips on potty training? I'm dreading it because of this issue.

Are you sure he's not a little constipated ? What's his diet like?

I would say he is constipated or not enough fibre in his diet.

I have no idea re constipation I didn't even think about he doesn't look in any pain and sleeps 12 hours but maybe he is I don't know much about constipation. His diet is varied he eats fruit and a little veg and everything else as well (chocolate etc) I give him a bit of everything really.

He has shreddies for breakfast is weetabix better?

There is something called I think the Bristol stool chart which shows different types of poo.
Maybe he needs more fruit / veg and possibly more fluids

Bertha I'll definitely look into that now thank you very much. Something needs sorting before I start potty training that's for sure. He does have fruit and veg daily but I'll up the dose so to speak. Do you think diary could play a part in this poo issue? Only my sister mentioned diary, but I'm not sure it would have an effect on him.
