2.4yo and wiping bum

Out of nappies nearly a month now. Nearly no wee accidents except when engrossed in something at nursery.

Does not like to go for a poo, which means a poo accident every day at nursery, and I think I figured out why today - he is scared or dislikes having his bum wiped. I think it is the leaning forward in mid air, even though he's holding on to me and I'm reassuring him.

Anyone got any light to shed on that? It's a new one for me, not had this issue with his big sister. Google has found nothing helpful...

Hmmm. It's not something I've had a problem with with DD but is he okay when you clean his bum in the bath? Have you tried using something different to wipe him with - toilet roll, wipes, cotton wool? The thing is he's going to need more wiping if he does a poo in his underwear than if it went into the potty/toilet. Have you tried laying him down to wipe his bum in the same way you would for a nappy change? Not ideal but if it'd get him doing a poo in the potty/toilet it could be a step in the right direction.

At that age they may prefer to go upside down, hands on the floor and bum in the air. More secure feeling and they often find it funny.

That's a good idea Footle. I might try that with DD as its a bit of a shit (pun intended) trying to clean her up when standing. And what toddler doesn't love to do a downward facing dog!

He does prefer to lie down, which is give at home but not do much if we're out! I'll try Footle's idea.

Also, since bumping this I've read a bit more on this board and wonder if we have a poo issue . He is just like Taler's little girl; says he needs a wee when it's a poo, then nips off the toilet straight away and doesn't want to sit on it for any length of time. He's only made it to the toilet because I can read him and distract him long enough for him to poo. At nursery he's been pooing in his pants. I'm terrified of him developing complicated issues after reading all the impaction posts, but he won't go back to nappies. Maybe we'll try pull ups and give the whole thing a wide berth. So confusing.

This was so much easier with my older DD...

So he will poo on the potty/toilet at home? Will the nursery not support him in the same way? Surely it'd be better/easier for them to make the allowance to spend that bit of extra time with him rather than having the clean him up and change his clothes after an accident.

I haven't read the other thread but my DD will say she needs to do a wee, goes to the potty and does nothing, a few minutes later the same thing and then eventually she'll sit on the potty/toilet and does a poo. I think they can't always differentiate between the sensations and just know there's something going on down there.

When you're out can you not take him into the baby change facilities? They usually have a toilet in there and that way you could lay him down afterwards to clean him up. I appreciate its not always like that though.

We've always down it 'downward facing dog' style. So hands on the floor, bottom in the air. No issues and it is quite stable position for them to be in.

He does, at home, but a bit reluctantly I must say. He's happy as larry doing a wee - loves it, but when it comes to poo he wants to pop off quickly, before he's done it (as you've described your DD). And when he is on the toilet for a poo, he's not happy about it. Even when I distract him for long enough for the poo to come out, he's complaining.

They've tried distraction at nursery, but sometimes he just refuses the potty/toilet. Sometimes he won't even give them the wee warning and just go in his pants.

At home yesterday, I only got him to the toilet because I could tell he was about to poo.

We do all the cheering and praise when he poos on the toilet, stickers etc. which does make me wonder if he's ready.

Yup downward dog here too. My DS does this happily in the bath as well (and sometimes in the swimming pool showers ) and it gives much better "access" for cleaning than generally standing up/sitting in the loo.

If you're concerned about the state of the floor in a public loo then he can put his hands on your foot instead/grip his ankles.
