Day 1, going badly, help please!

DD is 2.2. This morning she got up, took her nappy off and said she wanted to be a big girl. Did first wee in potty. Since then has refused to wee, despite drinking lots. i suspect she needs to poo and is holding it all in. I've offered her a nappy and she cried and said no. she's getting quite cranky and looking for lots of cuddles. I'm not in a big rush to train her, and was planning on waiting until my holidays in a few months but she's the one leading it.

how's it going now, has she managed to pee?

The first day of potty training is generally horrible IME! Plus I was amazed how long DS could go between wees!!
Any luck today?

No, she eventually peed in the garden. She was clingy and cranky all day, very out of character. Today she cried when I asked her to sit on potty, and asked for a nappy again. So I think I'll leave it a little while- I think she got the idea from nursery but wasn't ready for the reality!

Started today with DD 2yr7m. 2 pees and 2 poos in the potty, 6 pees on the floor. Give up or keep going tomorrow?

I think she knows when she needs to poo but I really don't think she has much control over peeing. I tried putting her on the potty every half hour or so but she would sit for ages and nothing would happen. Then the minute I would take her off she would say 'oh no!' and be standing over a puddle!

Some of her accidents were only 10 mins apart so even when she did pee in the potty and I would start an activity or game with her I was still caught out. Does this sound normal to anyone?

Ah leftover my DD did all her wees right beside the potty yesterday. But mostly just held it- at one point she was waddling because her little bladder was so full but still refused a nappy or to wee on potty. Then today she was distraught at the mention of potty so I didn't continue. I think she's physically ready but not quite there psychologically.

I'm going to spend the next few weeks praising her for sitting on potty and get nursery to do the same, and use my next week of holidays to try again.

Your DD sounds like she was doing much better than mine- if she's not upset I'd keep going tomorrow.

I don't know, she won't even sit on potty right now. I might suggest she try.

We've had day one it's gone amazing as she gets a dolly mixture sweet if she does a wee so she is all up for it? No poo though and one wee on floor. Can you bribe with a sweet or reward as I think it's that that made a difference.

I gave up at 11am today. Dd is 2.10. Has absolutely no clue what to do. Puts her bum on the potty for a split second then jumps up. Doesn't even seem to realise when she is peeing. Unbribeable too at the moment. Might try again tomorrow.

Mine is not won over by bribes of chocolate/sweets I'm afraid. She was unwell last night so I haven't mentioned potty. I might give it another go next week as I have a few days off work.

Has anyone trekked out yet? We did car journey one hour there and back for day out but let her wear nappy both journeys. Not sure if this is right thing to do but I wasn't sure how to get round car journeys, especially when they can fall asleep etc.

When my DS was training, I just made sure he went before we left (if it was an hour drive). Probably would have put a pull up on if I thought he'd nod off. He was a dream to potty train though. The whole "girls easier to train than boys" myth is not ringing true in our house!

Debating whether to try tomorrow or just leave it. I think physically she is ready, she can go ages without a pee. But emotionally she seems miles away.

What's she like just at home, if shes having more success than failures Wacca then have the nappy off at home and put it on everywhere else.

I'm back. So she's been showing zero interest in nursery, but coming home and ripping the nappies off.

So this weekend we went all out with the pants/potty.

It still hasn't gone great. She is very stubborn and will not sit on potty when directed to, encouraged to or bribed. "I don't like potty, no thank you!". She will however shout after about 2 hours "I do wee wee, potty". And invariably not make it. So yesterday we had accidents only. Today we had 1 wee and 1 poo in potty, otherwise accidents, mostly near potty.

How do you coax a stubborn 2 year old to sit on potty to try to go before it is too late?!! She needs to go to nursery just tomorrow morning, then we have a few days at home. Any advice?

I've read all the books which say encourage onto potty regularly (no hope), sticker/chocolate buttons (she likes the sticker alright, but not enough to actually make her want to do it!) and that we should be seeing more success than failure after 2 days (nothing close to it!).

Could you try making a little game? Lots of big drinks and then lots of 10 minute activities, then you both race to the potty afterwards before the next 10 minute activity. Set a timer that goes off noisily. So, bubbles in the garden for 10 mins, when timer goes, race to the potty. Sit there for a few mins and ask her to try. Before she gets fed up, reward with a sticker for trying then off to next 10 minute activity - story time, or dolls, or snack, or playing chase in the garden etc. Reward for every try. Lots of praise for actual wees and poos. Gradually expand the length of time between timers and the length of time you 'try' on the potty.

I'm addition, every time you go, sit her on the potty, 'just like mummy'! Lots of enthusiasm.
