Advice to start before our holiday or hold off

DS is 2.5 and we go on holiday abroad in 7 weeks. For easiness I was planning on starting to toilet train him when we get back and the health visitor also advised me to wait.

But he seems to be showing signs now and I'm scared we are going to miss the boat if we hold him back so to speak. He's interested in the toilet and is aware when he is weeing in his nappy.

Do you think it's possible to have him toilet trained by then or will it be too much hassle taking a newly toilet trained toddler on an aeroplane etc

Has anyone been in a similar situation? I was planning on leaving it as long as possible in the hope that he would crack it quicker (ha!) but we are having another baby in sept so we would be giving it ago this summer regardless

I do wonder too, if you ignore the signs, it is harder to start later on. I would go with it, 7 weeks is loads of time.
If you ignore the signs, he might think, ok no point in trying to alert you, and training will be harder later on as the instinct has been retrained. Thats totally my own opinion and no scientific proof!
My 2.2 year old is day trained now and I just followed his lead. I thought he was too young but we just did what he wanted and now he is using the loo daytime and in pullups at night. It went from nappies all the time to trained with no accidents in about 10 days. Not sure how average that is, but 7 weeks is plenty of time.
We went on a long road trip over the weekend (about 3 hours in the car) and I put a nappy on him. but he shouted from the back of the car when he wanted to go and didn't use the nappy. He can hold wee for about 10 minutes. If he tells me, and we can't stop, then he is slowly increasing his ability to hold. The first week, he could only hold for about 2 to 3 minutes.

Thanks for replying. That's great that it only took him 10 days. I think I just need to bite the bullet and go for it.

I think you're right that once you miss the boat it's harder. That's pretty much what the health visitor said as well at his 2 year check.

Good idea about using a pull up for the long journey, we would be able to do that on the plane. Id never even thought of that!

Depending on how it goes I would advise keeping a pull up or two for the plane journeys. We flew soon after dd was toilet trained but she wore a pull up for the flights. We did explain to her that it was a just in case and promised her a treat if she kept it dry. We literally put it on at the gate. I couldn't face dealing with an accident on the plane!
