Please please please help!!!!

Hi everyone,

My DD is 2 and a half and has been successfully potty/toilet trained since she was 22 months.

That is, until about 2 months ago. The thing that changed is, she realised she was capable of holding it in for long spells so basically won't ask to go until she's absolutely desperate. Sometimes this results in a bit of wee in her pants, sometimes enough to soak through to her trousers a little. I've tried to explain to her that she needs to go sooner but I feel like she's just not getting it! I've tried rewarding her when her pants are dry and ignoring the accidents. I've tried telling her off a little when she's left it too late. Over the last 2 months, I have tried everything and I just don't know what to do.

I'm finding it quite soul destroying to be honest. Especially since she's been so good with using the toilet for so long.

How can I fix this??? Please help.

My son is the same age and we started potty training about a month ago and over the past few days have had the same problem. For us though I did consciously stop reminding/forcing him all the time about a week ago. For a couple of days he was fine but now he has started doing the same thing. I thought it was all about learning control but reading your post about same thing I am not so sure. He has started going less frequently like you said. I was going to try reminding more often again but it is such a battle when I ask him, he just says no and is nightmare getting him to go. I haven't tried reward chart or stickers yet, have you given that a go?

Oh it's so frustrating isn't it. I don't want to jinx anything but today was a better day for us, only because we managed to rush her to the toilet very quickly every time. It's just such a pain since she previously had it nailed!! I've tried giving stickers, treats, everything :( I'm sure other people have success with it though so I have my fingers crossed for you. The frustrating thing is, she's upset with herself if her pants are wet but I can't seem to explain, in terms that she understands, that the solution is to go sooner. Today there were a couple of occasions where we got her to the toilet before any leakage and I gave her a big cuddle as a well done and it was clear how pleased she was. The trouble is, even on these occasions, she should really be going to the toilet 5 minutes sooner and I suppose from her point of view, it's pretty much pot luck whether her pants will be dry or whether it's started leaking out since she's leaving it so late to go. I really hope this gets better as I'm anxious of taking her anywhere that involves not having a toilet immediately available. Wishing you luck with this too! Please let me know how you get on x

Things have gotten better here the last couple of days and no accidents for 2 whole days so I am hoping this is it but who knows. How have you been doing?
