Advice please, no idea what I'm doing!

DD is 2 9. We've bought two potties and had them in the house for her to get used to, she's sat on them lots of times but no poo/wee. Yesterday I decided to give it a go. I put her in knickers after her lunchtime nap and she managed a poo in the potty. I wasn't even in the room at the time so she obviously knew she needed to poo, pulled her knickers off and did it then came and got me so I thought that was a great start. The problem is wees, she subsequently did three puddles on the floor with no warning so I had no chance to put her on the potty. She was upset at being wet. I did regularly ask (and am today) if she needs a wee and the answer is always no I'm fine. She does take knickers off and sit on potty or ask to be put on loo regularly but nothing happens.

I guess what I'm asking is should I carry on or is she not ready? She's never told me when she's weeing or that she needs a wee, only poo.

Also do people generally stay at home while doing this? It's not really practical as DH works away so I do need to do shopping etc and I'm back at work Tuesday. Do I ask nursery to keep her in knickers? Tmw I have a family BBQ to go to that I can't get out of, if I put her back in nappy for that will it just confuse matters? Don't want her to have an accident in car on someone else's house.

Aargh so many questions sorry. Googling is just confusing me.

Stop worrying. Kids do wet themselves as they are too engaged in a game. Whens shes wet walk her to the toilet ... do not say anything. Leave her there to fetch clean things. Stand her in the bath for a wash amd then change. Take your time. You want her to learn that the potty is quicker than the faff of being changed. BBq is out doors so not a biggy ... but ive had a few kids piddle on the carpet ... not an issue. Nursery jave done it before so stop worrying.

Thanks for replying polly. Today we had one wee on the floor and one in the actual toilet, which she took herself to. She is hopping on and off potty and loo all day and didn't want to wear knickers much. I am a terrible worrier, about everything.

Potty training was bloody rubbish, I hated it.

I have found that it has taken months for DD to really reliably know that she wants to go and ask to go in enough time to not have a panicked rush to the loo.

Just keep taking her to the loo regularly and encouraging her to go, but I wouldn't expect her to be managing that side of it herself much for the first few weeks. But lots of praise, and give it a few days. I'd say it was by the end of day 4 that I felt we'd broken the back of it and yes, there were still accidents every now and again but it had seemed to click and she knew to try and get to the potty every time.

Good luck! But if you don't think it's working well after a few days you can always step back and try again later. And a lot of people have success with gradual training of potties at home and pull-ups when out.

Day 3. Got up this morning and happily put knickers on. Has been either naked or asking for knickers on all day so far. But she's held in her wee since 7 this morning despite drinking a lot of milk and water. She clearly wants to go, holding her hands between her legs and she's even saying poo coming. She keeps getting on and off toilet or potty herself dozens of times but getting straight off saying I'm fine now. She started getting tressed and eventually produced a peanut sized poo nugget in the potty but got upset about it.

I asked if she wanted a nappy and she said yes and led me upstairs to put nappy on. Have I done the wrong thing? Should I have persevered, should I try again with knickers tomorrow or leave it for a while?

She's now asked for knickers back on and upset at nappy being on. She had weed in it. I'm so confused.

Following this post. I have no advice, but my daughter is around the same age, we started potty training this weekend and we are having a similar problem in that she holds her wee until she can't any more despite being put on or told to go on the potty when she announces that she needs a wee. We had a really good morning yesterday with no accidents and even a poo on the potty but since then we've had a few accidents and I'm finding it all really stressful.

Best thing i did was get a magazine with the stickers on ... DS could only read this on the toilet and got stickers for going.
