Should I stop and wait a bit longer?

Ds is 2 years 8 months. He's known for a while when he needs to go and we were offering potty and pants but he always said no. A week ago we left him without his nappy for a few hours and told him to go on potty every half hour. No wees, but no complaining. We put a nappy back on for going out/naps and he peed in that. We've only been doing a few hours here and there and had first wee in potty beginning of the week, then 2 wees yesterday.
We praise and give a choc button but he honestly isn't that bothered. His sleep seems to have been affected with struggling to go to sleep a few times. Then last night we had a 2 hour period in night of him being awake and wanting one of us with him.
This morning I left his nappy off and he got really upset so I've put it on.
What should I do now? Stop and wait until he actually says he wants to do it (I'm doubtful that day would ever come) or persevere a bit longer just doing a few hours each day?
I should also add he has a 3 month old sister and has taken well to her but we have seen some regression in other areas. The thought of staying in for a week to try and crack this isn't appealing as feel I need to get out to keep my sanity!

I'd leave it and try again in a few months ish. We tried a number of times with dd1 and looking back I can see she just wasn't ready, like your ds she got upset and anxious without her nappy on. She then got it pretty quickly and quite stress free for both of us a few weeks after she was 3.

Maybe you could just leave the nappy off for a while in the morning or before bed time for a while.

I found the best approach was to wait until they are completely ready.

I've got three dc and this is what I did.

I waited until I felt each child understood clearly about the potty and wee and poop.

I went and bought pull ups. Said these were special pants for the toilet and potty.

I put them all on the loo every ten to fifteen minutes. After a few hours they were going there themselves.

Of course I had to repeat each day but after a week it was mastered.

The nights were different and a nappy was given until the child said they no longer wanted it. At this point I restricted fluids for 1 hour before bed.

I think definitely a good plan to stop for now. I had 2 false starts with each of my DC.
But when they were ready, they were dressed in pants and leggings which they could easily pull up and down themselves, they knew what the potty was for and where it was, and I just let them get on with it. Hourly reminder to use the potty on the first day, then it was up to them - just a reminder before going out.

Both completely dry and independent within 3 days (DD2 was even wiping herself and flushing the contents of the potty down the loo herself by day 3 ). Only a handful of accidents since. They were 2.10 and 3.0

Once they are motivated and ready, it is the easiest thing in the world, so I'd save yourself the hassle. Starting earlier won't make it happen any more quickly if they aren't ready.
