Having just read a thread about an older baby being trained and the opinions not being favourable, I am now wondering if I have made a mistake...

My son is 8 months, we are using cloth nappies, since starting solids, he started to wait until I had his nappy off to poo.
So I thought get a potty, see what happens. He now has a try every time I put him on it, seems quite happy sitting there.

I have no illusions I am going to get him potty trained any time soon but am I confusing him and will it make it more difficult later? Should I get a portable one to take out with me? Should I go back to him pooing on his mat and back away from the potty?

I do feel it's rather odd for a baby to learn to use the potty already, but maybe it's because I have never heard of it Confused

The only thing I have witnessed is that my brother was introduced to toilet training very young and now he is 5 and still wetting the bed every night :/
So it kind of back fired on him!

Have a read up about elimination communication, for some people it works and i suppose in some cultures they don't really use nappies. I have never done it but it does sound interesting and if he is going on the potty then it saves you a wet nappy. I suppose the key is not to stress yourself about it.

We did EC from the start with DS, and he was comfortably going to use the potty as soon as he could crawl. We also used cloth nappies which I really believe help with the potty use. He is four now, and no regression or backfiring.

Not dealing with shitty nappies is a godsend! Dd was reliably clean from about 1yr (although I used to hold her over toilet rather than nappy so didn't have to deal with shitty nappies either.)

Thanks for that, I will have a look at the book. I didn't even know it had a name!

No problem! Good luck!

We put ours on the toilet every time we changed nappy from around that age. Ds1 was fully trained by 16 months, ds2 by 20 months. By 10-12 months all poo was def in toilet
