We started potty training DS1 yesterday who is 2.5yo. We're planning a few outings this weekend and don't want to cancel them.

We have a portable potty we can bring with is but not sure about the etiquette. Do you just lay it on a plastic bag wherever you are and pull their pants down....? In a shop? On the pavement...? Is it ok for a little boy to pee in the street...?

I'd try to find a loo unless it's a real emergency. When we potty trained we just tended to stop at loos at regular intervals rather than wait until it was too late!

Please don't just use it anywhere - try and step back from the panic of an accident and think about it when you arrive anywhere. Avoid using it anywhere near food (shops, cafés etc) or near other people - take it off to a corner or toilets or somewhere out of the way.

If this is not possible - either because there isn't anywhere to go or because your DS can't hold it long enough - consider using pull-ups just for that short time. We used to use 'car pants' for the 30 min journey to nursery when we were training DS.

I would still try and be discreet but if you're worried about little accidents I found the dry like me liners were very good in early days. Especially on the occasions that DS was likely to fall asleep whilst potty training eg in car.
