terrified of potty training

i have a 21 month old boy (19 corrected due to prematurity) he has started showing interest in the potty, however he has no problems going to the toilet on it, wee an poo but he seems to try to push something out every time then gets stroppy if i dont flush it. its almost as if he is going purely to watch it flush, so i am worried he hasnt quite understood the reason for it and just thinks it is a game at the moment. he also isnt bothered wether he has a nappy on or off. i am extremely unsure of wether he is ready for it or not as i dont want to push him to do it if he isnt, also i didnt ask him to use the potty he just randomly started doing it.

not to mention i am pretty worried about doing it too. im a first time mum who has had a rough time with prematurity and lung disease etc so i am not the most confident within myself.

I'd leave it for a while. He's still tiny. In my experience (2 DCs) when they are ready its easy. My DC1 was 2 years 8 months and DC2 was a little bit older. There was no drama. I just waited until they seemed ready (awareness of when they were about to go etc) took the nappies away and put pants on. Both were reliably dry in a weekend. There's really no need to push it for at least a year yet!

well thats my concern is he knows when he wants to go and asks to go on potty etc but inbetween thoose times he tries to force it etc, he will happily sit there whilst he does a poo too. hummmm, so confused ha!

Hiya, we tried potty training DD about the same age (21 months or 19.5 corrected) as she was showing a big interest in it. Didn't work - she did perfectly when we were reminding her to use the potty every 20 min (like it was a game to her) but as soon as we reminded her less often or stopped reminding her, ie as soon as the game stopped, she didn't think about it at all. Sounds like your DS may be similar ie fine as long as it's fun and has novelty value but may be too young to actually do it on his own and for the sake of being dry iyswim?

We are going to try again next week (DD is now 26 months/24.5 corrected) so we'll see...

that sounds like my little boy lol. could you let me know how it goes? i will leave it, i havent mentioned the potty to him in 2 days and he isnt bothered about that.
