He won't poo without a nappy

I've recently potty trained my DS who's just turned 2 1/2. He picked it up pretty quickly and now takes himself to the toilet for stand up wees. He did a couple of poos in his potty initially and we though we'd cracked it.

But he just will not poo in the toilet or the potty now, and we're about 8 weeks in! When he wants to go he tells me he needs a poo, goes and gets his nappy and changing mat and lies down! If I try to get him to go on the potty he gets really upset and won't go. I've tried various bribes/rewards but nothing works. Tried lining the potty with a nappy too but he wasn't having any if it.
He's always been a bit funny about his poos- as soon as he had control he never went when we were out and has never poo'd at day nursery even though he's been going a year.
Anyone else had a similar problem? Any advice?
Xx

Hmm, my ds was exactly the same. Dry within 1 weekend at age 2.5, and never had any poo accidents, but insisted on using a nappy for a further 6 months or so. I can't remember what changed in the end, I think he just decided that it would be okay to use the toilet.

Sorry, that's not much help is it?!

My friends dd did this til she was 4, when she decided all by herself that it was time to use the toilet. They would take a pull-up out and when she needed a poo they would go to a cubicle and put it on. Apparently it's quite common that children don't like seeing part of themselves flushed away.

this is pretty common right up to school age, not much you can do but wait it out.

My son was the same, in pants during day from 3yrs 3months but would not poo until his night time nappy went on. Went on until 3yrs 9months when all of a sudden he started doing them on potty then v.quickly after that on toilet. Our efforts to persuade him just made him really upset so in the end we just left it and it turned out fineSmile

DS was the same until he was over 4. Night-time nappy on, hide behind the sofa, poo, change and off to bed! His little sister showed him how to poo on the toilet eventually - potties were always a no go. Don't worry - he'll get there!
