Poo frequency in 2yo

Just wondering what other 2 year olds are like in this area. I'm beginning to suspect my DS is 'withholding' poos. He only goes about twice a week and it's always pretty, er, substantial - 2 nappies' worth, directly after one another. The thing is, I can tell he needs to go for hours, sometimes a whole day or two, before he actually does.

Does this sound like it's not often enough and is it worth seeing a doctor for medication to make them softer? I think he puts it off until he can't any more as he thinks it hurts, and does seem to dislike the process.

Also would potty training help with this or is it a sign they're not ready? He has only just turned two so still quite young, but my MIL reckons all hers were trained by their second birthdays and I should get on with it. Was thinking of starting soon but I think we've already got an 'issue' with pooing, so to speak, so wondering if I should sort that first.

Any experiences welcome as I don't really feel I should discuss this with friends IRL!
