Randomly spooked by the potty?

Hiya, my ds is 2.11 (3 next week :o ) previously he's been excited about trying the potty, has had a couple of wees on it but couldn't really control himself so I thought we would wait a bit. Now he knows when he needs to go and what he needs (pee/poo) so I decided to start this morning.

He started his usual dance indicating he needed so off we went and he sat on the potty quite happily, chatted away and then suddenly started to pee which seemed to upset him.

He jumped up (stopping himself from peeing too) and refused to sit back down no matter how much I coaxed and bribed him. He really did not want to sit down and pee even though he still needs.

He's now been dancing about holding himself for the past half hour but refuses completely to sit on the potty or toilet, getting upset if I try to take him near the bathroom.

We've previously talked about what happens when he has a pee and poo, he's never had a problem with it before so I'm a bit confused. Any ideas?

Oh, not sure if this helps but my daughter was absolutely terrified of the potty/toilet until she turned 3 too

Hmm. The sound? or do you think the pee could have wet his skin?

There wasn't really much sound and I didn't notice he got wet, it's quite a deep potty and he only done a little trickle before jumping up.

Managed to get him to do a pee, he wasn't too happy about it though but at least now he's not dancing about in danger of getting a sore bladder :(

Has he done lots of peeing not in a nappy? no nappy time in the garden for example? I just think it's quite striking that starting to pee upset him, and so perhaps some sensation was unexpected.

Not really rootypig, he's never really been inclined to go without a nappy before and after what happened with my daughter (massive back story there that I'm not sure is appropriate for mn) I've had difficulty with accepting dc being undressed in front others, including each other.

Theselittlelightsofmine my son is literally tiny, he's a just turned 2 yo cousin thats the same size as him one of the smallest boys of his age too, 90th percentile for his hight so I'm not sure standing up is so great for him atm

A potty training book I read made the point that without realising it, we spend the first few years training our DC only to wee / poo in their nappy. The totally understandable shrieks when you get peed on when they're tiny, through to irritated reactions to wee or poo in bath / on floor or whatever - it all teaches them that going outside the nappy is wrong. Then after a few years of this you whip off the nappy and tell them to go on the potty (which makes perfect sense to you, because it's still in something) but to them feels totally different.

I'd do lots of no nappy time if you can manage it - let him get used to weeing not in a nappy in the garden - and a lot of talking / positive reassurance about the sensation of weeing into the air. Let him see his dad use the toilet too, if possible.
