Is it true that they have to sort pooing before peeing?

My DS is 2 years and 9 months and we started potty training a couple of weeks ago. He still doesn't seem that ready though. With pees, he will say 'I need the potty' and is aware of getting there in time but he is nowhere close to pooing in the potty yet. He will literally stand there pooing in a corner of the room, looking away from me and saying 'no' when I ask him if he needs the potty. Either that or he waits until he's in a pull-up for his nap. He's not really a biddable child so just lifting him and putting him on the potty when I know he's pooing will not go down well! He also doesn't seem to care that his pants are soiled and will run away from me trying to change him, although recently he has improved a bit and started telling me 'I had a poo'.

So is there any point potty training if poos are still not happening in the potty? Some of thei advice I've had suggests that you should wait for readiness with poos first before starting training.

What I'm doing right now is potty training 'lite' as I'm calling it where I encourage potty use at home as much as possible but for poos I take him into the bathroom to change soiled pull-ups, emptying them into the toilet so he sees that poo should go down the toilet etc. Is there any point in taking it any further if he is still not ready to poo in the potty?

Not true, Most children get peeing sorted first, some even don't get the hang of pooing in the toilet until school age.

I did the Gina ford book. - potty training in a week, worked fabulously and I would highly recommend it ( although it took longer than a week) , highly common for poos to be the last one to conquer!!

Ive potty trained many children over the years because of my profession and found that boys train a lot later than girls.
IME girls tend to do it around 2 and get it straight away. Boys are much more difficult and in my opinion lazier than girls!
My own DS turned 3 in May and whilst he would sit on the potty if put there he really wasn't ready for training as he couldn't tell when it was needed in time and also couldn't pull up and down his trousers etc.
We've only ever done the odd day when we've been home and usually gone through pants galore until 2 weeks ago when he told me he was a big boy and has been in pants ever since. First few days we had a couple of accidents but for the last week he has been dry even on trips!

If they have more than a couple of accidents then they are not ready and it's best to leave them.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. That seems to make sense to me as DS has a couple of friends his age, boys, who are exactly the same. Happy to pee in the potty and wear underwear up to a point but nowhere close up pooing on the potty yet. Just confusing to know when he is really ready if poos are still an issue!

I think if he knows he has to go and can let you know / take himself off to pee, and ask or wait for a nappy to poo it's generally considered trained.
