Where are we going wrong please wise mumsnetters? DD will be 3 in a couple of weeks and we started potty training a week ago after a failed attempt at Xmas.

She is brilliant at weeing/pooing on the loo or potty when I put her there but will not tell us when she needs to go. I know she can because on day 1 she told me twice she needed a wee. We are rewarding tries on the loo with a sticker, 2 stickers for doing something in the loo. If she fills the sticker chart she gets sweets (eg mini packet of haribo). We don't get cross with her, just say oh dear never mind and remind her to tell us next time.

A week in and its getting no better. I have a 7 week old who is a prolific pooer and between them they are drowning me in an endless conveyor belt of changes and dirty washing. Any advice or do I just plough on?

Plough on! Reward when she asks, and she should get there eventually. My dd has been out of nappies for 9 months now and still needs reminding to go to the loo at least once a day!

Ds1 was the same and we also had a baby. It may be different for your dd but an hour after he had a drink I would take him to the toilet or potty. He seemed unaware too. An hour was the magic time for his body to process it. It seems wrong when you have a baby changing a toddler's nappy! He is now 9 and definitely dry! Stick with it it will happen, although it feels like it won't!

Thanks both, we shall keep going then. Will add a reward for telling us tomorrow and see if it helps. God help us if we're out and about and have a repeat of the poo incident we had today. Had to shower her off!
