Is this a sign she's almost ready for potty training?

DD is 18 months old and is getting quite articulate about what she wants now. An interesting thing happened today in that I took off her (dry though a couple of hours had passed) nappy and she got in the shower, then after a minute seemed a bit distressed. She got out and started saying the equivalent (for her) of 'loo, loo' and about 10 seconds later pee'd on the rug. She seemed a bit upset about peeing on the rug.

Am I reading too much into this or do you think it is a sign she is getting ready for potty training? Is it not too early? She's clearly aware of when she needs to poo, etc (given the look she gets on her face!), but I don't want to rush her into anything.

I would get a potty and let her play with it, not really training as such but just have it there, you could keep it in the bathroom and put her on it if it happens again.

Go for it; many are ready for early stages at 18 months, although a lot of posters on MN would have you believe that potty training before 2 was only achieved through rigid discipline and that all such children will inevitably suffer bowel and bladder issues. This is not the case at all; in fact leaving it until your hefty 3 or even 4 year old has become set in his ways and attached to his nappy seems much more problematic.
Try sitting DC on the potty first thing, and before the bath/shower and she will get used to it very quickly.
Good luck!

Hey,

My DS started showing similar signs at the same kind of age- so we just bought a potty and got him to sit on it every night before bath time and 9/10 he would do a wee! We kept it really low pressure as figured we had time on our side! we then decided to let him sit on it during each nappy change for a few months. Then bought him pants asked if he wanted to wear them (normally just for a couple of hours after nursery or while we were round the house)! A couple of months ago he decided he wanted to wear pants all the time- so he is and is doing great! It has all felt really natural and low pressure for him and us!
