3 year old scared of pooing

DS has been potty trained since October (he potty trained himself practically, I gave up) but he's scared to poo in the toilet. He'd rather dance around clutching his backside with a distressed look on his face than just going to the toilet.

I've tried rewards, star chart etc. he literally only goes when he's reached a point where it's fallen out of his butt but in the loo while he's weeing.

He used to hide when going for a poo in his nappy so I give him his privacy whenever I take him to the toilet. in fact he'd tell me to "shut the door please mama" Is it shyness?

It's driving me crazy as he's constantly asking to use the toilet every five minutes, or less, because he's constantly bursting but then he never goes. He becomes hysterical if I insist that he stays on the toilet until he's done so I just let him off.

Any suggestions, I've taken him 15+ times today so far and it's putting me in a bad mood

I have exactly the same with my 3 year old. He is dry during the day will happily use the toilet for a wee but gets hysterical if I mention going for a poo. Has had 3 accidents today and the same as you he knows he's doing it and dances around on his tiptoes. I've even tried getting him to sit on the toilet and read a book just to try to relax him but to no avail. He does the same thing at nursery as well, we've tried bribery, shouting (us) screaming (him) and just not sure where to go from here.

Really sorted out my withholding toddler.

'Poo goes to Poo land' on YouTube worked for my toddler too. After watching it she instantly went and did a poo - no problems since.
