Moving from bare bottom to pants

We've been trying for months to PT DS (2.5) and he just wasn't getting anywhere unless we put him on the potty for ages. A brave friend suggested I tried bare bottomed and after initially caulking at the idea of pee alllllll over the floor we did it, and after 1 pee on the floor where I stuck him on the potty midstream it's been fine. Or at least at home where he has no pants.

Put him in pants and take him to nursery and he acts like he has a nappy on. He weed his pants at home yesterday because I thought I'd leave them on to try.

How do we move from bare bum to pants?!

We did LOTS of talking about it before moving over. Hence chirping in the back of the car, "I've not got nappy on, I've got knick-knicks on. No wee-wee in knick-knicks, wee-wee in potty".
