Dirty protest!

I have a 27 month old son whom we successfully potty trained over the school holidays. He is perfectly dry day and night and never has accidents.
However, my brother and his wife take care of him while my wife and I work. While there my son repeatedly wets himself, and often gets through three sets of clothes in a day, as well as wetting furniture and carpets.
I'd like to be a fly on the wall there to see exactly what's going on, but to me it's clear that he is protesting at having been left there. He has three cousins there, one of whom is about six months older and is also potty training.
Unsurprisingly my sister-in-law is pleading with us to put him in pull-ups, but naturally we are resisting as it's a massive backwards step.
What should we do? Please help!

I would try and find an alternative childcare solution, if this is totally out of the question you need to get to the bottom of the issue..

It may be a few things..

Seperation anxiety can cause huge developmental steps back, is he well socialised? How ofter has he been with sil prior to this arrangement?

Is your SIL prompting him to go to the toilet? Sounds probable that she isn't if she wants him in pull ups

Either way it needs fixing, the only way is laying down the law with sil or finding an actual childcare setting.

How long have your brother and SIL been looking after him? Have there been any problems before now or has he seemed happy there?

Thanks for your questions: he's been there for a couple of years, but obviously sans-nappy only since the start of this month. He seems to play well with his cousins.
He has also stayed for a week with the grandparents with no problems, so separation from his parents alone can't be the issue.
They say they are prompting him, but in our house he doesn't need prompting - even shouting us up in the middle of the night to take him to the toilet.
I'm not sure whether one problem is that he uses the toilet in our house, whereas their only toilet is upstairs and they'd rather he sit on a potty in the living room.
I'm sure he is, at least on some level, deciding to do it, as he can go three or four days there without a problem, and then for whatever reason he'll just refuse to tell anyone he needs a wee, and just crouch on the floor!
