Hand washing

When potty training, do you make them wash their hands every time they sit on the potty or only when they produce something?

I am making ds wash his hands when he produces something on the potty, we go to the bathroom to empty and clean potty, clean hands and get a sweetie afterwards.

If we go sit on the toilet I make him as hand regardless of whether he goes or not.

When ever my Dd sits on the potty or toilet she washes her hands. She really likes to so I'm hoping it will continue!
