How/when to get DS dry at night?

DS1 is almost 3.5 and has been dry in the day for over a year. He doesn't regularly nap any more but if he does he stays dry. I'd really like to get him dry at night as he's very big/tall (1m6cm and 18kg) and it's hard to find nappies to fit properly. But I've no idea where to begin night training him. His nappy is usually wet in the mornings. Do I really have to wait till it's dry or can we start training him anyway? For daytime training we just started when he was 2 as we live in Belgium and kids have to be dry to start kindergarten at 2.5. Is there any point doing something similar for nights? Is it really hormone related?

I don't think you can really 'train' them at night - if they are deeply asleep they just have no conscious control. ITrying to force the issue would just mean stress, frustration and loads of laundry, IMO.

I just waited until the nappies were consistently dry in the mornings, which for DD was pretty much as soon as she was dry in the day, ie less than 3, but DS took nearly a year after daytimes, so was nearly 4. Lots of children take longer.

Both mine were big for their ages, and giant for Japan where we were living at the time, but I still had no trouble finding pull-ups big enough. In the UK sizing for drynites pull-ups goes up to at least age7, I think.

You can't!

It stops when the body releases a hormone to halt urine production at night.

Yes it is hormone related. You just have to wait until he's ready. In my DD's case this was when she turned 4 and in my DS's case it was straight away when we potty trained him (2.5)
