Holding it until in a nappy

DS is just 2, and I think may be ready for toilet training. He has been having lots of nappy-free time as he has eczema which nappies aggravate, and I noticed he had stopped having accidents on the floor, he was waiting (up to 4 hours sometimes) for his nappy before peeing. He has also been telling me when he's done/doing a wee/poo. So I decided yesterday I'd give it a shot, and explained that he was a big boy and big boys do wee-wees on the toilet, like Mama and Dadda, and put him on the toilet every half hour for at least five minutes. Nada. He was happy enough to sit on the loo, reading a book, but wouldn't do anything. When I put a pair of underpants on him, he did pee, but even though we were about a foot away from the toilet when I scooped him up and put him on it he just stopped. He had no other accidents, just waited for his nappy. Today he's had three accidents, but every time I scoop him up and take him to the loo to finish, he just doesn't. Then five or ten minutes later he finishes as another accident (two of the aforementioned accidents were one wee IYSWIM). He must be able to toilet train if he's able to hold it for hours, and his language skills are good enough to understand what I'm asking him to do, he just won't do it. Accidents upset him, even though I'm not negative about them, he seems surprised and a little unsettled that he's weeing and tries to back away from it whilst it's happening.

Help! House training dogs is so much simpler. Sad

I would wait for a few more months. He obviously isn't quite ready yet and no point upsetting him and making it an issue.

Hiya!

I sympathise with you. When we first started with our little girl she was doing the same things! So like sirzy said I would wait maybe a month and try again. I waited 5weeks until trying again and our littlen got it that time round. Had a few issues like refusing to poo on the potty and waiting for a nappy, but how we got round that was by leaving a nappy of for night time so she couldn't go in the nappy, only choice was the potty and that seemed to work! Every child is different though and takes time so just remember to keep cool and be patient :)

Hope that helps and all the best with it! X
