Wet panted nearly five year old

Has anyone any ideas to help with my nearly five year old boy? He was potty trained at 2 1/2 with not too much bother (after the initial first week of fun) however in the last three months or so he constantly wets his pants - e.g. twice today. He doesn't seem to realise he's done it and it varies from sometimes just a dribble to total soaking. When I ask him why, he says his brain doesn't know he is doing it. I have tried making him go more regularly but sometimes he can wet himself within minutes of going to the toilet. I have tried sticker charts, excited praise at dry pants, encouragement, chocolate bribes, indifference (and occasional frustrated annoyance at wet pants - yes, I know not a great strategy).
He's a fairly bright, busy and happy kid, but wonder if this is carelessness, laziness, excitement, physical or mental/emotional, and I am getting worried as he starts school in September and I worry about him either smelling like a tramp or having visible wet patches. He is currently at preschool and although I have had a word, they don't seem to notice that he has wet pants, which I am not sure if its a good or bad thing. At home he either goes and changes himself or I tell him to go change.
Incidentally he is totally dry at night...
Has anyone been here before? Any tips or strategies?

Have you taken him to the gp to rule things out like uti's?

Agh, no. Not thought of that. Gp's Monday morning.
