Is this to be expected or is she not ready yet?

I started potty training today, one wee started standing up making lunch she then announced she needed a wee and finished off on the potty. She did a poo in her nappy in her nap (regular occurrence!) no sign of needing a wee or a poo. Have asked consistently through the day-she has said no and said he didn't need to sit on the potty. She lay down on the sofa to be a patient (playing drs!) and when she stood up she'd done a big wee, she was surprised she had done one! 'oh, I didn't know!' So does all this mean she's just not ready yet? Or is this just a normal first day potty training?! I think she's much more excited about her pants than she is about actually potty training!

I would imagine it means she isn't quite ready yet - I read somewhere that there are physiological stages.

1 = aware of having done a wee

2 = aware when it is happening, but unable to stop it

3 = aware it's about to happen but not able to wait

4 = advance warning, time to get to toilet or potty before it happens

Sounds like she is at stage 1 or 2 - they all get there by themselves, it's not necessary to rush them or train them at all really! Fewer accidents if you wait a few more months I guess

Thanks. She's very enthusiastic about the idea of it and wants to wear pants and use a potty/toilet like a big girl. I just don't think she's physically ready-she's cleverer than her body! (That's not a stealth boast, I hope you know what I mean!)

So do we just go back to nappies and try again soon? How soon? I'm pregnant, due in May and selfishly would love her to be potty trained by then...obviously won't force the issue though!

My lads were never keen to use the potty really so I didn't have that conflict...they just got on with it as and when they became aware of it, and able to etc. (around 3)

How old is she? I'd suggest waiting a few weeks, having another go, see what happens. Girls tend to do it sooner than boys, I have heard... good luck with it and with the baby!

She's 2 years and 3 months, so I know she's quite young really. She's just been so keen and with the new baby in a few months I thought it was worth a go! Hopefully I haven't made a huge mistake!

Oh goodness I'm sure you've not done anything wrong, if she is keen I'd have given it a go too. And she's not that young for a girl, iyswim - boys are usually a bit later for some reason.

You were reasonable to try it, but perhaps best to put it on hold for a little while longer, if you can manage that without disappointing her too much! Shouldn't be too long now x
