My ds3 has been potty training for about 6 weeks. He still doesn't tell me when he needs a wee! Currently I take him every couple of hours and we are pretty successful but I know it's down to me taking him. Should I stop and just remind him to go? And as for poo, that's a disaster. He seems to have no recognition of needing to go and has no problem sitting in it! Any suggestions welcome, I don't remember his older brothers being like this!

Sorry but he's clearly not ready. Put him back in nappies and try again at a later date. All children are different and will potty train at different times.

I agree that he doesn't sound ready. How old is he?

Oh dear, I thought about maybe putting him back into nappies but didn't want to confuse him further. He's 3 (just). But if that's the best way then maybe I'll have to. We don't make a big deal out of accidents so he's not pressured...thanks for your replies.

Potty training is done and dusted in a few days, when the child is ready. Both my nephews were nearly 4 before they were trained. My 2DD and 2DS were all ready at age 2. People talk of 'lazy boys' but I don't agree with this, when they're ready, they're ready. And this will vary greatly in age between children.
I don't think you'll confuse him by putting him back in nappies, he's probably more confused now because he's just not ready.

This sounds just like my son (3.4), except we've been trying to train him for nearly a year now! He still doesn't tell us when he needs to go either and is not bothered at all if he wees or poos himself. I almost feel like we're going backwards as he used to at least tell us when he did a poo in his pants, but now he just ignores it until we realise and then denies it! Have finally decided to go back to nappies after trying absolutely everything, as we've come to the conclusion that he's just not ready.

Forgot to say, we saw our health visitor about this and she said it was perfectly okay to leave it for a bit and wait till he's a bit older. It's frustrating though as he understands an awful lot and I don't know why he can't get this whole toilet business! I think maybe he's not physically ready and would urge the OP to just go with nappies as suggested, before your relationship with your son suffers for it. That's partly why we're stopping for now, because everyone was getting upset and stressed about it. Good luck, I'm sure it'll come together at some point!
