Help please .....

My DD is 2.2 and today is day 2 of potty training. She likes wearing knickers, can get them up and down by herself, will sit on the potty/toilet but wees in there are just a lucky coincidence so far.

What I really want to know is, during this potty training will she "learn" that she needs to go, or is it something that just comes naturally and she is too young at the moment? She doesn't seem to realise when she's doing a wee at the moment.

she's very young to train - has she been showing signs of readiness - clutching herself when she goes, dry nappies in the day?

If not, then i would stop

Hmmm, no to clutching herself. She does very big wees which completely soak a nappy and there are sometimes quite a few hours between wees (currently without a nappy she is probably going about once an hour).

hi thesmith, tbh 2.2 seems quite young to train. its hard to know. eventually she will learn when she has to go, but i would go without the knickers for now, just let her go bare bottom.

you should know that the older the child is, generally the easier it is to train them. it may take you two weeks at this age just for the child to realize sensation, let alone making it to the potty.

Thanks guys :-) We don't have anything on for a week so are going to give it that long and if no improvement at all, will stop and wait another couple of months.

We are on day 4 and my daughter is 2 at the end of this month. She is doing really well. If I say "mummy wants you to try to have a wee" before we go out or before nap time she sits there for a moment and usually wees within 30 seconds. I'm really pleased about this. Last night after bath she said she needed to "wee again", sat there and her first poo came. She was a bit scared but we then did a poo dance around the potty of poo which she loved!
As yet, she rarely tells me that she needs to go although will sometimes wander to the potty and wee without me asking. We are staying home as much as possible. Yesterday we had 2 accidents & 4 successes. An improvement on the day before. We will keep going but of course I'm really hoping she starts to tell me that she needs to go. Hopefully that will come.

I would keep going if I were you. At the end of the week if you are up to 75% success rate keep at it but if a lot less maybe come back to it in a few Wks.

Hi loulourw - today was actually much better, particularly this afternoon. We have now recognised the signs she does when she wants to go (clutching her bum, whether for a wee or a poo!) so are able to catch it now and managed 2 wees and a poo in the potty. Also, she was eating her tea and really wriggly and wanted to get down so we let her and she went straight to the potty and did a wee so we are REALLY pleased she seems to be getting the hang of it, and bless her she does have an ear infection at the mo too so she is trying really hard :-)

That's really good news. My question is very much the same as yours. My daughter has been very good at going when asked to but less successful in telling me. I wonder when they will learn its coming. Though this morning he did wander to the potty once he was up and said "I done a wee' which means its coming so she sat and did a wee which was really good. Going out has been a bit of a nightmare & cabin fever is setting in for me. Will keep at it. She just announce " wee is in my Minnie!" Then did another so so far so good today. Good luck today x

Aw good for her, she sounds like she is getting the hang of it better than mine lol! Yes we have been stuck indoors for days, I don't want to risk going out lol!! xxx

How's it going? Y'day was 100% successful but one poo accident indoors. She delivered 3 pottys of wee to me that she had done whilst I been out of the room. Managed to go for a swim (great place to go when potty training believe it or not!) - she peed on her porta potty before and after. Today she peed in a high chair at lunch today so she is yet to tell us she needs to go all of the time. Still trying to stay home most of the time. Hope you are making small progress together x

Hi! Unfortunately we have decided to give up for now. In the end she didn't want to sit on the potty/toilet at all and seemed to be withholding her poo too (usually goes 2x day but then nothing for 2 days) so I think she isn't ready yet. She still couldn't tell when she wanted to go so we will try again in a couple of months or so. Good luck to you - it sounds like you are nearly there! x

Thx. No turning back for us now I think but poos are our next hurdle as she too is less keen to sit for these. Good luck with it all next time x no shame in putting it aside for now and coming back to it x

I think you are probably making the right decision based on what you said about the poo. I did a similar thing with DD when she was 2.3 and she started with the poo withholding very quickly too. Problem was she decided she liked to wear knickers rather than nappies and didn't want to go back, so I have spent the last 6 months or so having more conversations about poo than i care to remember

I thought we had started to make progress, but she is still starting a lot of poos in her knickers. We also recently went on holiday over the festive period and because we couldn't take her potty, she held her poo in pretty much for the whole week and I had to get her something for the constipation and build up once we got home - just a stool softener not a laxitive - but I then ended up with a huge pile of pooey clothes sent home from her nursery because she was unable to hold it in once it worked, and kept having accidents.

My advice to anyone now is not to do it until their DCs are truly ready as this has been a hard and stressful time and has been one of the most difficult parts out of this whole parenting lark!
