Day four and we're going backwards - should I give up?

Started potty training DD2 (2.5) on Friday.

Day two we had one we accident and one poo accident and all the rest went in the toilet (she won't use potty).

Not a bad start, but day two was worse, probably about four accidents (inc one poo - though I'm not too bothered about poos atm, happy to tackle them separately once she's dry)

Yesterday was the worst day ever. Accidents all day - never asking to use or taking herself to the toilet. If I ask her is she needs the toilet she just shakes her head and "uh-uh" without even thinking about it. Just doesn't want to do it. Refuses to sit on the toilet at all sometimes.

Today she's been in knickers since she got up at 7 and had one accident and one wee on the toilet (after I put her on it).

I think she does actually know when she needs to go but has decided she doesn't want to do it. She's a very stubborn child.

Would you give up and leave it for a bit? I tried potty training about 6 weeks ago and gave up because she was just refusing to sit on the toilet unless I bribed her (obv haven't made that mistake this time).

It's frustrating as I know she can happily wee on the toilet. I'm 3 days in and worried if I give up and leave it another few months she still won't do it because she just doesn't want to.

Hi chicane, we had this with DD 3yrs and have decided to put her back in nappies as she was not recognising when she needed to go and by the end of a week was getting stressed about using the potty - even though she loved her pants. Sorry can't be more help - from what i can see on here some toddlers just get potty training quicker than others and they all seem ready to do it at different times. No shame in giving it a break and trying again in a month or so.

I feel your pain! DD was three in Ocrober and we started training her on Sunday at her own insistence. The first four days were dry (poo's are another matter all together and she insists the nappy goes on - happy to go with this until we have the wee's sorted). Feeling very chuffed as no accidents at all, that was until today with every single wee being done on the floor. It doesn't bother her as much as I thought it would which concerns me a little as she's also said that she doesn't like the toilet and doesn't want to use it. Argghhhhhh. I'm not backing down as I feel we've come this far and at 3.1 she's well and truly old enough to be trained. (Also, we're not in the UK and it is warm here so timing is good for us.)

So I've no wise words or advice, just wanting you to know that you're not alone. Best of luck and let me know how you get on.

I'm on day seven today (after almost giving up) and yesterday we reached the giddy heights of a 3 hour session at pre school with no accidents as well as three poos on the toilet!

Hurrah! I thought, but it was followed today by 3 wee and 1 poo accident, but she is poorly with a stomach bug so I think that accounts for some of it...

Just an update to say we're on day 8 and she's taken a shine to the potty and has taken herself off for a wee unprompted 4 times today. Progress at last!!

No good news to report here unfortunately - still plugging away with DD telling me today that "...going to the toilet is boring and I don't have time for it !"

Thanks tumbigirl! I hope you have a better day tomorrow. Dd2 was def getting bored of it too - i sank to bribery of a sticker and a smartie on day one so upped the ante to much more appealing sweets yesterday - i found one of those pez sweet dispensers shaped like snow white and let her move snow whites head to get a sweet every time she did a wee.

The novelty will probably have worn off by tomorroe but at least it restored my sanity today.

I am jealous of your hot weather! Freezing here and lots of lovely tummy bugs doing the rounds to make the whole process more, er, interesting!

Don't worry, we have bribery here aplenty as well and have THE biggest ever lolly jar imaginable which only ever makes an appearance after a success on the toilet. I'm sure I'll be paying for it at the dentist in years to come but at least we'll be turning up to the dental appointments with her wearing pants and not a nappy .

I feel for you with the tummy bugs making the rounds - it would be making the process a much more difficult!

Hi can I join in? We're on day 13 (yes 13) with 2.6 yo DS. He started off ok, by day 4 had about 75% success rate, then it all went downhill, he was just peeing everywhere.

He's not keen on sitting on hs potty. Yesterday I was getting fed up and put him on the toilet with his training seat and he did a pee, then told me he needed a pee later too.

Today we've had one pee outside (toddlers toilet) which is a first. Then he had 2 accidents, one a poo, then 3 successes all on the toilet. I think he can pee at will now as the minute I put him on he pees. I am hoping this is the breakthrough he needs.

I have 3 daughters, DD1 was a nightmare, in hindsight she should never have been potty trained before 3 she has a terribly weak bladder, DD2 & 3 got it in day's. The boy is a challenge to say the least.

I'm very happy to form a 'persevering in the face of adversity thread' here with you guys. Having had it a walk in the park with DD1 (sounds like you with two of your DDs, sweetkitty) I have had to rapidly adjust my expectations with DD2.

So here's to celebrating small victories!

First boy though, all this talk of pee coming out your dinky and pointing winky down and of course I'm saying nothing about now he is nappy less his hand is constantly down his pants.

Hello, greetings and welcome sweetkitty! Sounds like you had a great day with DS on Friday - big yay and fingers crossed it continues for you through the weekend.

DD is my eldest (she has a younger brother who is sixteen weeks old) so this is my first foray into potty training. And oh geez, I never expected it to be this hard. That been said, we had a fab day today with not one accident and all wee's in the toilet. Big yay! She's still not keen to go sit on a whim, but after me asking her if she needed to wee every 20 minutes ALL day, we managed to get there every time. No poo's today (a bit unusual, I think she's having a bit of stage fright IYKWIM) but as Chicane said, happy to get to the dry stage first.

DD is a feisty, spirited, bright and stubborn little girl - just wondering if your DC have similar personality traits?

We've had a good day, just one wee accident (on DH's watch) but the others have all been on the toilet without us prompting. DH caught her straining (sorry tmi!) this morning and got there in time so no poo accidents.

Yep tunbi, my DD2 ia feisty, spirited, stubborn etc. Her big sister had picked it up by day 2 but she is much more of a people pleaser. DD2 generally does what the hell she likes!

Day 14 here and we have had a dry day, we've been taking him to the toilet where he will pee and he's asked a few times.

We have had 2 poos in pants though :(

Oh and now when he's being told off (frequent usually for battering a sister) he immediately says I need the toilet as he knows he will get praise and a sweet, manipulative at that age!!

Apologies in the lack of posting - RL combined with visitors and Christmas has put a bit of a stop to getting online. I've been mn-ing on my phone but find it a faff to post.

Hope it's all turned a corner for you and things have become much easier on the toilet training front. sweetkitty - I had to laugh with your last post regarding DS requesting the toilet when in trouble. They're crafty little beggars aren't they?

We seem to be going pretty well with the wee's and DD will now happily 'announce' that she needs to do one and will take herself off. She also accepts that they're are prescribed times that you need to go (like before a bath or before leaving the house) so we're happy with that. However, we've yet to go to successfully go to the loo outside the house - I'm hoping guessing this is quite normal? I have a fold up portable toilet seat thingy but she seems a little scared to go in a public toilet or indeed anywhere that's not home. She starts preschool for two days a week in January and I'm not sure how this will go - not to mention the toilets there are communal and in one big bathroom. Considering she asks for her privacy and for the door to be shut a home (can you believe it? It would be nice if she afforded others the same curtesy ) I'm a little worried as to how she will go.

Poo's are a different story altogether and she asks for her nappy to be put on and then locks herself in the cupboard to do her business. Strangely, I'm less concerned with this as I know this will come with time.

Hopefully you've both cracked it and have forgotten this thread altogether!
