Give up and give it a few more months?

Hi,

I've started potty training my 2.4yo DS. He's shown an interest. He loves his potty books and absolutely hates having his poo nappy changed.

We're on Day 6 now and he's managed to do a poo in the potty (yay!) which he was pleased about but he's struggling with the weeing.

Firstly, he doesn't seem to wee that often. He went from 8am this morning to 13.00 without having one. He's having plenty of fluids but I always had a strong bladder so perhaps he's the same.

I've been putting a nappy on him for his naps, and I suspect he might be waiting for this.

He's quite happy to sit on the potty (mostly). I've been rewarding him with chocolate buttons (a little too successful).

He also has been trying. I bought him some presents as rewards for if he managed to get something in the potty and he was trying so hard because he really wanted it. He kept getting up to check if there was anything there and then sitting down again.

The problem is that the few times he has weed, it seems to have taken him by surprise and he got quite upset at having wet himself. I know bladder control comes later in boys and I don't want to push it if he isn't physically ready.

I'm wondering if I should stop going at it full tilt and let him keep the nappies on, and just encourage me to let him tell me about the poos.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Warning: I'm going to post and run, and will check back in the morning.

Leave it and try in a couple of months, he's not ready. Also, boys aren't always later than girls. All my 4dc were trained in a couple of days, 2 boys, 2 girls, no difference in my experience. Mind, mine all went straight to the toilet, wouldn't use the potty. Smile

I would leave it! I went through hell with my first DC bowing to the pressure of other mums asking me why I wasn't potty training, "Oh but my DD has been dry since she was 2.." etc.
I swore I would never go through it again!

With my DS I waited until HE asked ME to wear his pants and use the potty, he was about 2 months off his 3rd birthday and was potty trained in about 3 days!

I did the same with my last DD and she took 4 days. She's 2y 9m.
In my experience if they are really ready then it's almost a non-event. They have the control, they know what's expected and they want to do it. If they're not quite ready then it can be utterly painful and frustrating as my poor 1st DS and I discovered!!

Good luck! Smile
