Training at 21mo?

DS is almost 21mo.

He's not talking yet; words here and there and repeats stuff, but not conversations IYSWIM.

But, he wants to take his nappy off all the time - and this seems to be after he's pee'd/poo-ed in it. (bodysuits on to foil this!)

He's also asking for a "shoowr" a lot - he seems to have made a connection between peeing and the shower after he accidentally peed in the shower and got upset (and we reassured him).

So, try to train him or not?

No harm in doing a gentle potty routine after meals for example, but keeping nappies on between times. Make a big deal of his successes but say nothing about an empty pot.

My DS at same age as yours wet his swimming trunks on the beach and announced as he was doing it "Oh, wee wee wee!" but showed no upset or any interest in taking his nappy off at other times. I think he must have been watching the older DC at nursery using the potties while he was being changed! He would only tell us after he'd pooed until he was almost ready for training. Having said that, I left him bare bottomed before he started training at nursery, and he managed to sit himself on the potty almost all the time to wee and poo, so he clearly knew what he was doing and recognised his body signals.

He didn't start cold turkey potty training until 2 and a half, but got it very quickly because they had been doing a gentle routine as above for a few months.
