The continuing saga...
I have posted here numerous times
DS1 [3.2 yrs] has been potty training for about a year with very minimal success. We thought we had started to have some success on the weeing, in that DS would wee in the potty at home when he had no pants on. However he now seems to be widdling on the floor, rug, sofa periodically in between taking himself to the potty to wee. Still no success when he has pants on as he just wees in them. So when we go out DS is in pull ups. I truly feel I am the only Mum of a 3 year old still in nappies. I feel embarrassed when he bends over and the pull up is visible
But anyway, that is the wee situation. The poo is now even worse. About 2 months ago DS pushed two teeny tiny poos into the potty for which he got lots of praise and positive reinforcement. Since then, nothing. If he has no pants on [at home] he actually tries to withhold the poo. Cue lots of dancing around and crouching, whining and crying. He then starts to get hysterical as the poo starts to emerge. It is like he is using pure force of will to stop pooing. It seems like a control thing.
I tried placing a nappy in the potty and this helped to a certain degree as he did actually try sitting on the potty for a little while. But he doesn't really want to poo sitting down i think [is used to standing up with a nappy on]. So he carried on dancing about and getting more and more upset. So I asked him if he wanted a nappy on and he said yes. So i put one on and he settled down slightly but I could tell that he was still trying to exert control over his poo and getting upset that it was forcing it's way out... Eventually he took himself off to a corner of the room and crouched down behind his toybox to poo.
I wonder if perhaps he wants privacy to poo but also feel if the potty is not in view in the lounge he will keep weeing on the floor....
I am trying to stay calm amd relaxed and don't think I am stressing him out... but something is so maybe it is my style of training!
I am trying to take a bit more of a backseat with it all and have actually started training his 16 mth old brother who takes himself unprompted to the potty and enjoys sitting on it [but hasn't weed on it yet]
Any advice or reassurance from others who have/had reluctant potty trainers would be most welcome!
Oh and we have tried treats, chocolate buttons, poo goes to pooland, giving DS a special toilet seat and step stool, praise, etc, etc....
