Day 5-DS has no idea he's about to wee

Day 5 of cold turkey. DS1 is 3y2m & showed all signs of readiness although has been slow to hit physical milestones before eg didn't walk till 18m & is still v small for his age.

He's been sitting on potty quite happily & has done mainly poos in it so far. We've been sitting him on it every hour or catching wees when they've started. But he hasn't initiated the potty use once & he doesn't seem to have any idea he's about to go. We are giving him chocolate buttons & lots of praise when he does something on potty. I'm also badgering him a lot in between the hourly potty time.

Is it just a matter of waiting until he 'gets' it or is there anything else we can do?

Be really pleased that he is happy with the potty and all the poos done in it! This is usually the biggest stumbling block in training. The danger when constantly asking if they need the potty is that they will either refuse and start refusing the potty also or totally ignore you.

It might be a bit of developmental delay in that he hasn't recognised the feeling he gets just before he wees as the one that tells him "you need to do a wee, sit on the potty before it comes out" Perhaps he sees no point in asking for the potty because you put him on it and keep asking between times if he needs it, so you could try leaving him bare bottomed, with potty in plain sight and see if he will use it without asking him at all (although I know this is risky for your carpet/upholstery!) You just say initially that the potty is there if he needs to do a wee/poo, and he can sit himself on it. You do have to stay there with him and not get distracted, and have an iron will not to nag.

I think give it another week and if no change you might need to re-assess. But keep up the potty sitting, even if he goes back to pull-ups.

Sorry I can't think of anything else!
